Here is an update of a race horse from Region 3 owners: The Arabian racing season has started and Pearl will have her first race of 2017 on March 4 at Sam Houston Race Park in Texas. She and her half brother, Sand Victor, are already in Houston and getting ready. The for fillies and mares, 4 Yrs Old and up, with invited amateur female jockeys from all over the world. She has drawn the #10 post position, which is not great, but the jockey has raced in the USA before and has won or placed a couple of times, which is great. She will also be racing against her 4 Yr Old full sister, Ruby AA,  who is really good. Terri Eaton, our co-owner and trainer, says Pearl is looking good. She is wishing Pearl would eat more, but she always feels that way as Pearl is a picky eater.
The race is scheduled for the fifth race on the schedule for March 4, 2017, and to run at 8:25 p.m. Houston time, (6:25 pm Pacific, I think). You might catch it on a race channel, though they sometimes skip over the Arabian races.
Brag Time  ---Pearl just won Champion Older Mare for 2016 from the Arabian Racing Assoc. of California. Also, she is a nominee for the Darley Award for her age group for 2016- this is the national award. The winners are announced March 31 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. She has a fair chance of winning, but you never know.
Now I wish the purses for Arabians were higher so we could more than break even. But it is fun.
Pearl is doing good. At Saturday's race in Houston, she came in second to her full sister, Ruby AA. Ruby was in the #2 post position and had a lead early on, running near the rail. Pearl was in the #10 post position, broke well, but ran on the far outside the whole race, so she had to run farther than the winner. I think that even if the amateur jockey had been able to get closer to the rail, she would not have been able to catch Ruby, a very fast 4 Yr. Old. We are very proud of Pearl's effort in beating a bunch of very good fillies and mares.
Pearl's next race is planned for April 1 at Santa Anita. It is a graded stakes race and she would be running against the boys. So it will be a very tough race.  That weekend the Darley Awards (national & international awards for 2016) are being given out. Pearl is a nominee for the USA older mares category and is also the USA nominee for the international award in her age group. This pretty girl has taken us for an exciting ride.  Racing is fun and I urge members to get information and participate.

Region 11

ARAB, Inc., a Region 11 Arabian Horse club, will host lecturer Joe Ferriss at the Sangamon Co. Fairgrounds, 318 W. Birch St, New Berlin, IL, on Saturday, April 15, 2017. "The Arabian Horse, A Long Journey Forward" will summarize the path of the Arabian from the early 20th Century in America to the present.

A potluck in tribute to the founder of ARAB, Inc, Charles Craver, who died on December 30, will begin at noon. Long distance guests need not bring anything but their appetites. The building will be open at 11:30 for gathering of Charles' friends and those who wish to speak to Joe Ferriss ahead of time. Joe's lecture will begin at 1 p.m. and include a tribute to Charles, who influenced U.S. breeding programs by continuing the line of Arabians first brought to America by Homer Davenport in 1906.

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1946, Joe Ferriss grew up fascinated by cars and art, and later getting a Bachelors degree in Commercial Art from Michigan State University. Married in 1969, his wife Sharon introduced him to riding horses, immediately after which they discovered Arabians. Joe quickly became consumed with learning all he could about Arabians, while owning and breeding a few along the way. He accumulated a large library on Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and general horse related information, some of which was inherited from his grandfather who was a member of the Arabian Horse Registry in 1918.

Joe traveled around the US throughout the 1970s and early 1980s filming many ancestors of today's Arabians and interviewing breeders as Charles Craver had done in the 1950s. For over 30 years, Joe has authored numerous articles on Arabians in America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. He has been a guest speaker and lecturer on Arabians since 1980 as well as serving as the Editor/ designer of Khamsat Magazine for 15 years. Joe was also a past president of Al Khamsa, Inc, the preservation breeders group founded by Charles in 1975.

Joe has traveled on research trips in Jordan, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain including spending time among the Bedouin tribes. In addition, he has designed and produced books on Arabian horses and on related Middle Eastern subjects for various authors like Judith Forbis' Authentic Arabian Bloodstock and Gail Goodman's The Saluqi: Coursing Hound of the East. This year marks his 47th anniversary of involvement with Arabians as he continues to enjoy his journey with this fabled breed.

OHHHH...What a night!
Region 14's annual banquet was even more exciting this year with the arrival of 'Goldie the Gelding'!  Yes folks, our beautiful golden Arabian is in fact a gelding! Our event was also graced with the presence of Goldie's creator/world renowned sculpture Mrs. Karen Kasper. Imagine, over 100 attendees, standing patiently, admiring this incredible piece of art, while waiting their turn for a photo of a lifetime. Director, Duane Esser with Karen Kasper gave a brief explanation live on Facebook of the project, The ArabianHorse for Humanity, a project of the committee through AHA known as the Marketing Development and Promotion MDP.
Goldie was not alone on center stage. Opening the evening we were treated to a spectacular precision with elegant ballroom dancing demonstration by Ms. Jennifer Henderson and Mr. Jani Szukk, of Louisville, KY.  Bright beautiful costumes and moves one can only hope to 'sort of' copy was on display.  Thanks to both again for such a special treat Jennifer and Jani. Member LaDon Donohoe again graced us with a wonderful collection of pictures for an ongoing slideshow through the evening.
Lively conversation as always played a major role in the evenings' events, rousing games of 'Family Feud' played between rivaling clubs within Region 14, a silent auction that raised money for Arabian youth and last, but so-o-o not least, the presentation
of AWARDS!!  Congratulations to all recipients!! See results below. There were two very special presentations to two very special people. The induction of two Region 14 members into the Hall of Fame: Mr. Jeff Caldwell and Mr. John Morici, both extremely deserving for their tremendous and passionate involvement in Region 14. A special thank you goes out to our banquet chair, Debbie Glasener, whom organized the whole event, Dave Daugherty for his work and organization of the awards, Ellie Troutman, Carl Malicote and Jeff Caldwell who put together a spectacu lar silent auction.
