Ask The Rabbi
Question: Why Do Jews Put Stones on Graves?

Answer: This is an ancient tradition (not a command) which has many interpretations. The most common ones are the following:
Flowers, though beautiful, will eventually die. A stone will never die, symbolizing the permanence of memory and legacy. By placing a stone, we also show that we have been there, that the grave is being visited and the person is not forgotten.

This is a Weekly Column in which Rabbi Feldman will answer any question you might have relating to Judaism.  Please email your questions to office@bethelwpb.com

"MODERN JEWISH INTELLECTUAL HISTORY"

Lecture 3

Cultural Transformation in the Italian Ghetto

Oddly, Modern Jewish Intellectual life begins in the 16th century with the Italian Ghetto System. Theoretically the ghettoization of the Jews required Jews to live in a segregated quarter within an urban center. This meant that Jews lived in contiguous quarters with their Christian neighbors. With the gates open during the day Christains and Jews came and went interacting in all spheres of urban life. This opened the way to dramatic changes in the character of the "Modern Jew."

All are welcome to join the discussion and video on Tuesday, March 28, 10:30 sharp in the social hall.

Sisterhood Mitzvah Month
Sisterhood Mitzvah Month

March is the annual Sisterhood Mitzvah Month. We are collecting donations for the clients of The Lord's Place.  We share their mission of "breaking the cycle of homelessness by providing them with the tools to become productive, self- sufficient members of the community."

The Lord's Place is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that helps its clients through innovative programs of rehabilitation and education.
As a Sisterhood, we at Temple Beth El reach out into the larger community by partnering with The Lord's Place to make a difference, Tikun Olum.
Do your spring cleaning NOW.
Starting March 1,  bring gently used men's, women's and children's clothes to the Temple lobby. Toilettries, linens, housewares, pens, paper, non-perishables, baby diapers and furniture (if bigger than you can carry, we'll arrange for it to be picked up) will be greatly appreciated by their clients.

One week left to bring donations for The Lord's Place to the temple. Van is coming to collect all the contributions March 30th. We have had a very successful and generous response from our congregants and the
Lord's Place  clients will be very thankful

Please contact Marilyn Saffer at marilynsaffer@gmail.com or 561-683-4931.
Upon request, receipts will be provided.
Mazel Tov to our March Congregants of the Month!

    Liz & Alvin Perlman

Liz and Alvin Perlman joined Temple Beth El, after relocating to Palm Beach County from New York City in 1972. Their two daughters, Amy and Jill, were active participants in services at Temple Beth El from their earliest years, and were frequently seen on the bima with Cantor Brody as they chanted prayers on High Holidays and Shabbat, read Torah and the Megillah, and participated as members of Cantor Brody's original children's choir.
Liz and Alvin served as school administrators in Palm Beach County for most of their careers, with Alvin serving as an assistant principal at the elementary and high school levels. Liz was principal of three elementary schools and a middle school, and served as the Director of K-12 Curriculum for Palm Beach County Schools.
During the 1980's and 90's Liz and Alvin volunteered their time in supporting the Meyer Academy (Jewish Community Day School), serving on both the Board of Directors and the education committee. Most recently, Liz has served as the co-chair of the Temple Beth El 2017 Gala, honoring Cantor Norman Brody.
These days the Perlmans spend a great deal of time on the road visiting their grandchildren in New York City and Gainesville, Florida.
The Perlmans are pleased to be part of the Temple Beth El family and look forward to many more years of affiliation

Book:  Love Finer Than Wine

The story and writings of two brilliant leaders murdered at a bus top in Jerusalem
Rabbi Edward Bernstein, author and friend of martyred victims Mathew Eisenfeld and Sara Duker, were the best of their generation. They were brilliant, spiritual and kind, two leaders and idealist who dreamed of serving as Jewish leaders to fix a broken world. Their dream ended in at a bus stop in Jerusalem, murdered by Hamas terrorists. Matt and Sara left behind windows into their souls. Love Finer Than Wine presents writings of Matt and Sara in which they contemplate the depths of Jewish spirituality, wrestle with the complex nuances of Zionism and probe Jewish texts with scholarly acumen.  The story of these two outstanding individuals and their writings are presented and edited by Rabbi Edward Bernstein, who has been active in Conservative Judaism for many years and is spiritual leader of Temple Torah Emet (Conservative) in Boynton Beach. He attended The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York with Matthew Eisenfeld.
