Many holiday activities and events were held recently including the Magic Belles Winter Show, the Tarver Elementary Christmas program, a performance by Madrigal, the High Point Elementary choir during Belton's Christmas on the Chisholm Trail, the North Belton Middle School choir, visits with Santa and our BISD bus in the Temple Christmas Parade! Chief Financial Officer, Jennifer Land, is pictured in the middle row, far left, with her daughter during the Board/Administrative Christmas Social.

The ending of  the calendar year is a time  to reflect on our accomplishments and establish new goals for a new year. In Belton ISD, we established and communicated our goals for the school year prior to the students beginning in August. The start of the second semester in January is a great time for us to renew our commitment to those 2017-2018 goals.

Three main priorities impacting our students have guided the work being done in our schools this year. They include 1) implementing the District's curriculum and instructional practices with a focus on writing and digital learning; 2) establishing positive cultures that support a mindset for learning, student attendance, safe and civil schools, and inclusive environments; and 3) advancing the achievement of our highest performing academic students.

On December 5, we celebrated students at Belton High School who are in the top 5% of their class at a special banquet to honor them and their families for their commitment to academic achievement. Students recognized in this group achieved a grade point average of up to 114 and have taken as many as 15 Advanced Placement and/or dual credit courses. For the first time at the annual event, we also acknowledged students scoring nationally in the top 95th percentile on the PSAT. In my remarks to the nearly 500 students, teachers and family members who were on hand to celebrate academic excellence, I expressed the importance of high achievement on the PSAT and SAT to college entrance and scholarship opportunities and our commitment to preparing our students for these exams. We want our top students to compete against top students across the state.

This month we also recognized the student athletes, student volunteers and staff that participated in Special Olympics competitions this fall. For the first time in more than 20 years, Belton ISD's Special Education Department facilitated a team competing both in traditional Special Olympics activities in the region, as well as organizing a young athletes program. With the support of student volunteers and invested parents, these students and their families are not only benefiting from competing against their peers but are being given an opportunity to be in the spotlight.

Celebrating all students for what makes them unique or different is a part of Belton ISD's commitment to building inclusive learning environments. Inclusive and safe communities in which respect is the goal and all students can thrive is a priority for Belton ISD that can be seen in the strategies and objectives being used in our schools.

Linked below is the video presentation shared with our campuses and departments to celebrate our fall semester. I am proud of the way in which our schools have stayed committed to our 2017-2018 priorities and look forward to the new year ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Susan Kincannon, Ed.D.

More than 100 students were recognized at the Belton High School Academic Awards Banquet. Seniors had the opportunity to acknowledge a teacher who had the greatest impact on their success.
It was a wonderful night to honor the commitment each student has made to achieve academic excellence, as well as celebrate with the families and teachers who have supported them.
Project Blue Elf volunteers from BBVA Compass delivered special holiday surprises to kindergarten and first grade students at Miller Heights Elementary!
Message from the School Board President:

Our Schools, Our Community!

Great things are happening in Belton ISD and this is an exciting time to be part of our awesome community. We are actively working to meet our goals of providing opportunities for our students to excel, while meeting the needs of a growing student enrollment.

This past week we were able to once again refinance some of our existing bonds to lower interest rates, effectively saving our taxpayers over $6.8 million without extending the length of the repayment. This is the eighth time since 2010 that we have taken advantage of lower interest rates resulting in savings of over $15 million. Unfortunately, the tax bill being considered by Congress will eliminate this great tool that we have used on behalf of our taxpayers. See the attached press release.

We received an update from our demographer indicating that our rapid growth is accelerating. Our student enrollment grew by over 400 this year (including 150 more at the high school level), and we are projected to have close to 13,000 by 2020 when we open the new high school and middle school. The attached  demographic report details the significant growth in housing in our area resulting in our student enrollment growth.

Construction on Charter Oak Elementary School, the Lakewood Elementary music rooms and gym addition, and Wall Street Auditorium will begin soon as bids were approved Monday. The Auditorium and Lakewood projects are expected to be completed by August 2018, and the new elementary school will open in 2019. Plans for Lake Belton High School are nearing completion so that its construction can also begin soon.

The Belton Educational Enrichment Foundation (BEEF) recently awarded $58,777.55 in innovative teacher and paraprofessional continuing education grants to support our schools. Grants awarded included a variety of projects including innovative reading and CTE projects. These grants demonstrate a great commitment by our community to promote innovation and creativity with our students. We are thankful for that support!

A supportive and engaged community makes our public schools stronger, and stronger schools make our community a better place to live, work and play. We are fortunate to have a supportive local community that recognizes the value of strong public schools and is committed to that investment.

On behalf of your school board I want to thank you for your continued support of our kids and our schools. Merry Christmas and may 2018 be filled with God's richest blessings for us all!

I Love Belton!
