KINDERSCULLS Rowing Camp
Open to both MCS and Non-MCS Students- **Space is Limited!
In rowing, like most sports, equipment size really matters. For a long time, this limited rowing to high schoolers and adults. With the creation of the Little Sculling Boat, the world of sliding seat rowing is now open to the youngest of athletes ages 5-9. Kindersculls is a traveling, half-day summer camp with 27 years of coaching experience.
What you need to know:
- The target ages 5 to 9-- though it's more about size and coordination than about age. "if your child can do a jumping jack, they can be taught to row."
- Safety is key, and the campers always wear life vests when on or even near the water. Strong swimming skills are not a requirement.
- The boats are designed to hold up to 120 lbs, the boats are descibed to be very stable and pretty speedy.
- The ideal is to have 16 campers for one full week. 8 of the campers would have a 3 hr morning session (8am -11) and the other 8 would have a 3 hr afternoon session (12pm-3pm). Please only choose either morning or afternoon, not both.
- Day 1 focuses on kids getting to know each other, talking about the parts of the boat, and addressing safety.
- Campers start on a tether... kids figure out the rowing part pretty quickly and are usually off tether by day two.
- Much of the 3 hr session is spent on the water, but they also incorporate stories, crafts, exploration, and snacktime.
- The last day of the session ends with a Parent Row-- goal is to have the whole family enjoying the experience of rowing. You get to see the kids rowing, plus can enjoy the water on the kayaks/paddleboards they bring.
