The board recognized members Art Gutierrez and Grant Riles and Superintendent Kevin Case for achieving Honor Roll status in the Kansas Association of School Boards Leadership Academy Training Program for 2016-17.
The board heard a report from EHS administrators on the new FLEX program implemented at the start of Trimester 2. The program provides extra academic support, mentoring, and career advising to the students. The goal is to help students establish a path for continued education at Flint Hills Technical College.
The board reviewed/approved the EMS Enrollment Guide for 2018-19. A small number of changes will be made to elective offerings but no changes were recommended for required courses.

The board approved the following:
- Request to let bids for internet access and related items eligible for E-Rate funding for 2018-19
- Request from the EHS band to travel to Indianapolis, IN, in August 2018
- A Memorandum of Agreement between the Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative and Southeast Kansas Education Service Center for Medicaid billing services for school-aged children
Other Board Business
EHS Auditorium Improvements
The board approved a request to replace the acoustical shells in the high school auditorium using capital outlay funds. Cost of the equipment is $21,591.
Capital Improvement Campaign & Facilities Study
The board reviewed a proposed timeline for a capital improvement campaign and facilities study that would begin in February and run through the spring of 2019. Superintendent Kevin Case and Assistant Superintendent Rob Scheib explained that the process would include a facility needs assessment and staff and community involvement.
Recruitment & Retention Report
The board reviewed teacher recruitment trends over the past three years and new-hire retention rates. Assistant Superintendent Kelly Bolin also shared data on teacher turnover the past three years and reasons educators are leaving the district. The primary reasons are retirement, leaving the profession, and relocating outside of Emporia. This data will allow us to begin hiring teachers early.
Tier II & III Reading Resources
The board approved a request to purchase software updates and teacher training at EMS for READ 180 and System 44 at a cost of $46,640.
