What's Happening in Grandview?

Tremendous response was received from our first issue of the Grandview Community Newsletter.  Numerous emails of congratulations and support poured in and at least 30 more requests to be added to the email database (which is now over 300 subscribers)  Obviously, this is fulfilling a need.  Please feel free to continue to forward this newsletter to anyone you think might enjoy receiving it.

Darts Night is underway. Rod Guthrie has sent in a report of the first night's festivities (see below)

Who likes Dominos?  (and who doesn't?)  A new addition has been added to our activities section (below)

More events and activities will get underway later this Spring as more Grandviewonians return from sunny southern climes.

Most of you have received the letter from Sheldon Rosen announcing the end of his rental business in Grandview as at March 1, 2017.  If not, I have posted the complete letter at the following link:

Darts Night

Rod Guthrie
(5631 Signature)

Rod reports in that the Darts Nights are going well.  Eight participants showed up the first night and sixteen the second night, several who had never played before.  Everyone had a good time and enjoyed themselves.

Mandy and Donna of Lodges of Blue Mountain purchased and installed two new boards on large cork wall protectors. They also purchased some darts for us, so a big shout out to them. The wings were delicious and the beer was cold.

Every Wednesday at 7 p.m. has been settled on as our "Grandview Darts Night".  Rod fully expects we will see more participants as time goes by.

A Jewel in Muskoka

Brian and Dana-Marie Langley
(5311 Hilltop)

Dana-Marie writes, "We spent many years vacationing at Grandview, both as a couple and then as a family with 2 children.  The dream of owning came and was realized 12 yrs ago, when we purchased our 1st unit (of 3) in the Signature Building.

Both Brian and I are very hands-on when it comes to renovating and are without fear when it comes to taking a very tired, original unrenovated unit to a new level of comfort and design.  Our two Signature units, which were adjacent to one another, proved to be the perfect scenario for our family.   We would stay in one, and right next door would be our children, and their families (just a 5 ft run down the hall for a kiss goodnight!)

We have recently purchased at Grandview again...totally renovating our unit that was 26 yrs old, in hopes that it will be a great investment, and a place for our family to enjoy for many years to come.

Grandview is a Jewel in Muskoka.  Let us hope that the pending purchase is in all our best interest and we are  viewing this new direction with a 'glass half full' mentality!"

Reflections of Grandview

Bill Donaldson
(5821 Signature)

Bill writes, "My first memory of Grandview is the sales office which was set up in the old barn currently located on the north side of the property on Highway 60. It beautifully reflected the vision of Bruce and Marie Evans to develop the old Grandview Inn property. The view, then and now, remains one of the best in Muskoka.

My wife's family, Fern and Ted Rogers had spent most of their lives as part time residents of Muskoka. The purchase and move to Grandview from the cottage on Mary's Lake represented a natural progression from an active cottage life to a lifestyle change that incorporated the many activities Grandview offered.

The amenities at Grandview were many from the outset. These included the golf course, the Inn and its fabulous and sold out brunches (Randy Spencer, now operating Tree Tops in Huntsville, was the presiding chef), the beach and docks, and wilderness trails. There was also a first-rate observatory and in Robin Tapley a naturalist who was on staff and who reflected the emphasis on nature and conservation which was part of the Grandview philosophy. In the winter, there was skiing, both cross country and downhill, with a cheerful shuttle from Grandview to Hidden Valley as well as skating on the Bay.

Incorporated into all this was tremendous support by the Evans on the performing arts and local artists. It is hard to believe upon reflection that the indoor tennis facility would be packed with an appreciative audience to see a varied and high level of artistic performances on a regular basis. The road into Grandview was often filled with parked cars on both sides.

Today's Grandview still reflects the vision of those early days and most recently plans for a renewal that is exciting and in keeping with its history."

Founder's Corner

Some musings from Gregg Evans, son of Grandview's founder, Bruce Evans

Gregg writes, "Bruce Evans closed on Grandview Resort in October 1986, and embarked on a mission to hire the best and most creative architect in Ontario. He settled on Peter Berton of the Colbourne Group, who was the youngest son of Pierre Berton, the Canadian author, journalist and television personality.

Peter Burton brought forward three different designs for the look of the condominium buildings for Grandview, and Bruce turned them all down. He was looking for something unique and Peter just could not satisfy him initially. Bruce finally gave him the key to his condo at Mount Mansfield in Stowe Vermont and told Peter to find what he was looking for there.   The result was what you see today.

The condominium sales office, in the old barn by the highway, was opened in May 1987, with the first offering being the (54) units that comprise Hilltop. Within three weeks, Hilltop sold out, and the condominium sales office won best sales presentation office in Canada that year.

Bruce spent every day in those first three weeks in the Sales Office meeting the prospective buyers. The frenzy to buy was unprecedented in Muskoka real estate. Bruce knew he had created a winner."
