April 27: Reading Between the Wines
Featured Reader: Bishnu

"I am so nervous because it can be hard to speak English. But I want to try. I am excited to learn and practice more speaking and watch English movies and kids movies too, speaking with friends and reading newspapers and books. I think that if I can do, I will be happier, and I will practice a lot to achieve my goals."

Bishnu is one of 70 learners who submitted writing and will be one of our featured readers on April 27.  Purchase your tickets and hear what else Bishnu will be able to do when she improves her English.

Semester with Maria: Part 2

Have you ever studied a new language? Do you remember the amount of work it takes to make even small progress and stay sharp from week to week? Imagine how hard learning a new language might be while working full time.

Like so many Literacy Network students, Maria balances studying English with working physically demanding jobs.

Thank you for supporting Maria and her classmates!

Student Success: Mohamed's Story

Originally from Morocco, Mohamed has worked hard for the past three years to learn English. He has taken multiple ESL classes and practices whenever possible.

Thanks to you, Mohamed now has a great new opportunity: applying for U.S. citizenship As part of an English for Citizenship class, Mohamed is preparing for rigorous naturalization testing, including written and spoken components covering American History and government.  Mohammed practices answering questions from the citizenship test as well as personal questions about himself, his family, and his time in the United States.

"I come here every week, twice a week. I am learning English citizenship . . . reading, writing, questions. . . I am not ready for the questions," Mohamed says with a laugh. Citizenship may be a  big challenge, but he always stays encouraged. He would like to obtain citizenship for many reasons, but the reason that motivates him most is to join his wife as an American citizen.
