Local Wellness Policies: Just the Facts
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently updated the local school wellness policy (LWP) requirements that went into effect in July 2017 (beginning school year 2017-2018). The LWP is designed to align with the updated nutrition standards for school meals, snacks, and beverages, and to address nutrition education, marketing of unhealthy food and beverages, physical activity, physical education, recess, and other school nutrition and physical activity practices and policies, including school parties and rewards.

Applicants Sought for 2018 CLIK Program
The University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health, the Kentucky Office of Rural Health and the UK CCTS Community Engagement and Research Program are requesting applications for the 2018 Community Leadership Institute of Kentucky (CLIK). CLIK is a four-week intensive leadership development training program offered in Hazard, Kentucky. It is designed to enhance research and capacity-building competencies in community leaders, senior staff, directors and administrators.

Online Course: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence

This training is the first of its kind for Kentucky hospital medical professionals to address the number one preventable cause of disease and death in our state. It will give examples of how to successfully provide brief bedside interventions for all patients who use tobacco regardless of willingness to quit, in three minutes or less.

Gateway District Health Department: Free Radon Kits
This past spring, the Gateway District Health Department was awarded a grant to distribute in home Radon Test kits and educational materials over a five-month time frame. Each of the Gateway District Health Department's five counties -
Rowan, Morgan, Elliot, Menifee, and
Bath Counties - were given 150-200 test kits. The grant project has finished up but some radon test kits are still available. Kits are
free to anyone and can be picked up at one of the five county health departments.

Generation Rx Grant Opportunities
The Cardinal Health Foundation has announced three requests for proposals for their Generation Rx Grant, targeting four of the states that have been especially hard hit by the opioid epidemic:
- Prevention Education for Youth: Grants will be available to organizations in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. They anticipate funding 30-50 programs at $25,000-$35,000 each.
- Best Practices in Pain Medication Use: Grants will be available to organizations in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. They anticipate funding 20-30 programs at $25,000-$50,000 each.
- Community-Level Response: These grants will be available only to communities in Ohio. They anticipate funding 5 communities at $75,000-$100,000 each.
