Research News

Establishing therapeutic strategies for Mesothelioma is our highest priority. To this end, currently, we are considering three research plans: i) developing immunotherapy strategies using Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC), ii) generating modified MSC for Mesothelioma therapy, iii) identification of target molecules for Mesothelioma therapy.

Developing immunotherapy strategies using Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC): Naturally, our immune systems have the ability to remove abnormal cells including cancer. However, some cancer cells seem to escape from the immunity by inhibiting immune cells. Indeed, in surrounding tumors, many disabled immune cells are observed, and unfortunately, immune-suppressor T-cells named regulatory T-cells (Treg) appear to inhibit anti-tumor immunity and protect cancer cells. Based on these findings, we plan to develop therapeutic strategies by re-activating anti-tumor immunity with the modified Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC).

PHLBI rung in the holidays on Wednesday, December 6th at the annual Holiday Open House at our research facility in Los Angeles. Guests included a range of mesothelioma warriors including Beranice, a 14 year Mesothelioma survivor (pictured on the right with her daughter and husband).
