King Charles III in the News
-Salt Lake Magazine
Right off the top, understand this:
King Charles III, British playwright Mike Bartlett's
audacious contemporary Shakespearean riff on royal power, isn't a biopic.
nstead, the speculative play uses the characters of the British royal family to unfold a
political thriller that's wrapped inside a family story, says director David Ivers.
-Salt Lake Magazine
In the scarily near future, King Charles the III will ascend to the British throne, steer the country
into a constitutional crisis, dissolve parliament, garrison troops at Buckingham Palace and
push Great Britain to the brink of Civil War.
And, he'll do it in iambic pentameter...

King Charles III, playing March 24-April 8, may satisfy your foreign fix until the next royal baby or wedding is announced. Hailed as a future history drama, the show imagines the events following Queen Elizabeth II's death and Charles' ascension to the throne...

Director's Notes
|
|
by David Ivers, Director of "King Charles III" |
"Make no mistake:
King Charles III
is a modern masterpiece."
I've always had a love for what I call the "gigantic-intimate-play." Having spent most of my studies and subsequent career getting "intimate" with the classics, this may make sense. These are big plays, yes. And, yes, they can be wordy, too. But my goodness are they thrilling. The classic repertoire owes much of its genius to...

"In the Event of the Queen's Death..."
|
by Dramaturg
Isabelle Smith-Bernstein
Queen Elizabeth II has been the center of world events for five generations. It is difficult to imagine her passing. The Queen's funeral has been planned down to the last second. Before the public can be alerted to her passing, several things must happen behind closed doors. First, the Palace must make sure that the Queen's four children and eight grandchildren have been notified. Then the Prime Minister must summon his ministers for an emergency cabinet meeting. The cabinet must then convene an Ascension Council which includes: Privy Council members, Lords of the Realm, High Commissioners of...

Understanding King Charles III
|
We know that understanding a political system other than our own (and sometimes even our own) can be complicated, so here's a little diagram to shed some light on a few of the terms you might come across in King Charles III.
Just like the US, there are groups forming legislature, executive and judiciary "branches," each connected. Unlike the US, there's the Crown--notably a part of, and yet somehow still separate from, the rest...

SYNOPSIS & CONTENT ADVISORY

Synopsis
:
King Charles III
imagines an immediate future in which Queen Elizabeth has just died, and Prince Charles is about to ascend the throne. But when Charles takes a principled stand against Parliamentary legislation that would limit the freedom of the press, his position sets in motion palace intrigues involving his son and daughter-in-law, William and Kate, along with his younger son Harry and his new, commoner-girlfriend, Jess. Juxtaposing the modern mania for the royal family with a Shakespearean-like approach to writing a "future history play,"
King Charles III
takes a fascinating look at Britain's current royal family.
RUNNING TIME: Two hours and thirty minutes; which includes a fifteen-minute intermission.
