Prospect North Partnership Update

SAPCC has continued its work with the Prospect North Partnership. The Prospect North Partnership, which includes a portion of St. Anthony Park (the area of South SAP west of Highway 280 to the border of Minneapolis) continues to make waves in planning and development in the area. With a thorough document detailing development guidelines in the district and clear goals including economic growth, equity, health, vitality, and sustainability among others, the Prospect North Partnership has started achieving significant success in realizing an innovative vision. SAPCC was proud to join onto that vision almost a year ago and has further connected with the Prospect North District by establishing a formal liaison role with the Land Use Committee. Land Use members Bob Straughn and Fred Foster were unanimously appointed by the committee to work with the Prospect North District and report back to Land Use on their efforts. SAPCC looks forward to collaboration and growth with this group.

City of St. Paul Addresses Green Line Corridor Accessory Dwelling Units

The City recently proposed allowing ADUs within one half mile either side of the Green Line. This includes nearly all of South St. Anthony Park (but none of the North side).

Right now, the Planning
taken into consideration the ADU plan and will make recommendations on accepting or rejecting the
proposal. They heard the proposal and study on February 5th. Many residents of St. Anthony Park submitted commentary to the Commission. If the proposal moves past the Planning and Zoning Commission, it will go to City Council. City Council will take public input and host public meetings about the proposal--giving individual residents of St. Paul another opportunity to weigh in on the process.

To learn more about the City's process or to ask questions about upcoming hearings and information sessions, please contact Jamie Radel at  jamie.radel@ci.stpaul.mn.us.

SAPCC Board Endorses ADU Task Force Recommendations

The SAPCC Board weighed in on the
the recommendations of the ADU Task Force at its January board meeting. The Board recognizes that ADUs are a contentious issue for our community. And although the Board has taken a stance in favor of adopting the ADU Task Force's recommendations, which includes endorsing internal and attached accessory dwelling units, individuals can still weigh in as the planning process continues at the City level.

The Board agreed that "ADUs may help reduce per capita energy use, improve the usefulness of some large homes, provide needed housing for relatives, seniors, friends, and others, increase the population density somewhat and thereby improve support of local businesses and schools, allow seniors to 'age in place,' and provide lower cost housing options that open the neighborhood to those who otherwise could not afford to move here." Read the full letter from the Board  here .

This process has been a long one for our neighborhood. Thank you to our Land Use Committee for hosting the conversation on ADUs, to our committed ADU Task Force for their countless hours educating themselves and others on this topic, and to our Board of Directors for their thoughtful decision-making. Thank you to all of our committed and passionate residents who have engaged a contentious and difficult conversation with vigor and open minds. Join Our Equity Committee
sepia_stacked_hands.jpg

SAPCC's board established an Equity Committee as one of our standing committees (joining Transportation, Environment, and Land Use) to work on diversity, inclusiveness, and equity in accordance with the goals identified in our strategic planning process. The Equity Committee, led by several members of our board, wants to increase its membership and impact on the neighborhood as it moves forward in defining and achieving goals related to social justice.

Do you care about equity? Do you want to work on meaningfully engaging racial and social justice in our community? Do you represent a community not historically engaged with the Community Council? We want you! Email Cailin at cailin@sapcc.org for more information or to ask questions. This committee meets once a month for two hours; the time of the meeting is dependent on the schedules of the members.
Spotlight on Colossal Cafe

A neighborhood favorite, Colossal Cafe, continues to grow and thrive. St. Anthony Park hosts the second location for this brunch superstar. They started their first location in Minneapolis in 2010, quickly expanding to St. Paul in 2011. Now, Colossal has a new location at Grand and Hamline in St. Paul.

The St. Anthony Park location on Como Avenue, sits in the heart of North St. Anthony Park. And with a line out the door most weekend mornings, you can be sure our neighbors have heard of it. If you haven't checked out Colossal yet, stop in for their famous flappers or a delicious sandwich--you're sure to see your neighbors. Colossal has been an amazing addition to the neighborhood, adding to the charm and neighborhood feel of our community.

The Tinucci's. John, Elizabeth, and Carrie Tinucci own and operate all three locations of Colossal Cafe.

SAP Church Break-in Fundraiser

SAP's Universal Christian Ministries Church
suffered a break-in and thousands of dollars in stolen property and money. The burglers stole the money the church had been fundraising for a mission trip to Sierra Leone. The Pioneer Press reported that the church will have to indefinitely postpone their mission trip because of the burglary.

Please help support the church! Make a donation to help get them back on their feet.
