A Fantastic Burgundy Value Wake Up Call

A BIG breakfast at 7:30, coffee of course, and at 11:00am the search for good Burgundy values begins. Some days are better than others, of course, when it comes to tasting wine for a living, but usually 2014s wake up all the senses, and in a good way. I've been extolling the virtues of this vintage for a while now, and no one I know has been disappointed by my selections. The vintage is so pure, crystalline, transparent, that one needs little imagination to see where the wines are, or where they are going. From "lowly" Bourgogne Rouge, to the best Grand Cru, it is filled with gems for every cellar, and budget. I still feel that in 10-15 years, with all the hype around 2015, most will regret not buying more '14s. But we can re-visit this conversation later, over a good bottle of Burgundy,  course.

So, what do we have today? Well, I fell in love bright and early with the 2014s of Cyprien Arlaud (Domaine Arlaud). From top to bottom, the wines are superb, full of energy, tension, with outstanding purity and plenty of upside potential.

As always, I find it more intriguing to discover little gems at the lower end of price ranges. Wines that can deliver lip smacking great value to consumers that want to drink well but not spend small fortunes to enjoy good bottles on a daily basis. It is hard with Pinot sometimes, but here is one that more than fits the profile.

Without further ado, I would like to present you Cyprien Arlaud's ultra delicious Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits 2014!

Medium ruby, crystal-like sparkle in color. The nose offers up reticent aromas of red fruit,a hint of bacon and smoke, violets and thyme. On the palate, red fruits carry on and build in intensity. The perfect acid levels of the vintage keep the wine refreshing, crunchy and lively. Balance is seamless and the finish is long and satisfying. There is much more buried and to come, so I would personally let this sit another 3-5 years, with 5-10 being the sweet spot. You can certainly enjoy it now, with a perfectly roasted chicken, but again, the best is to come with a little more age. In short, for $23, this is a CRAZY good Burgundy value. Don't miss it!
