Community-Based Research, Feet First
Caring for feet is among the many health challenges facing people experiencing homelessness. Susan Dyess, Ph.D., and Andra Opalinsky, Ph.D., of the Christine E. Lynne College of Nursing, and Nancy Stein, Ph.D., of the Department of Anthropology, discussed the foot health challenges of people who are homeless at a 'Field to Forum' presentation on the Boca Raton campus last week. Pat Liehr, Ph.D., also of the College of Nursing, shared the 'Field to Forum' approach she and other colleagues pioneered.

During the forum, Steven Roper, Ph.D., executive director of the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative, asked the first question. He told the investigators he wants to further support the project. The initiative had provided $500 to enlarge and mount 20 photos of the team's foot care service for display on cardboard boxes.  READ MORE .

Healthy Aging Call for Pilot Research Projects
The Institute for Healthy Aging and Lifespan Studies announces its first call for pilot research project applications. Competitive projects will be designed to produce preliminary research results that will support future applications for extramural funding.  

The inaugural program will fund three $30,000 awards for faculty members. Additionally, two $5,000 awards are designated for trainees, including students, residents, fellows and postdocs. All pilot research must be completed in one year. Institute membership is an eligibility requirement. Applications are due April 28. READ MORE.

Exhibit to Take You on a 'Journey Through the Human Brain' 
The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium has embarked on a $2 million fundraising campaign working with the FAU Brain Institute to build a permanent exhibit called "A Journey Through the Human Brain." Early funding for the cutting-edge interactive exhibit comes from the Quantum Foundation.

The exhibit will feature more than 2,300-square-feet of space, which will boast a new west wing of the science center. Watch the WPTV -- Ch. 5 (West Palm Beach NBC) coverage here.

Honors College Professor Wins Landscape Studies Award
The Foundation for Landscape Studies has selected "Landscapes of Exclusion: State Parks and Jim Crow in the American South," by William O'Brien, Ph.D., as an award winner for the 2017 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize.

O'Brien is a professor of environmental studies at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. His book focuses on the untold history of segregation in state parks. READ MORE.


Pre-Award Training Series Kicks Off 

Increase your knowledge of the pre-award process by attending the Office of Sponsored Programs training series next month. Unique sessions will be held on April 12, 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to noon on the Boca Raton campus, with videoconferencing available to FAU Harbor Branch, Jupiter and Davie.
