Spring 2017
Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you well. We have some interesting news to share about what the Delaware Sea Grant College Program (DESG) has been doing over the past few months, but first I want to bring your attention to a unique opportunity for any high school students you may know who are interested in marine science. The College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) is offering a 13-day, residential camp where students learn firsthand about coastal science from CEOE faculty and DESG's marine education specialist, Chris Petrone.

The camp runs from July 16-28 this year, and students will gain an understanding of topics ranging from salt-water marsh filtration to alternative energy. More information is available on the CEOE website. The application deadline has been extended, but only until April 14.

In addition to representing DESG at TIDE Camp, Chris Petrone will be spreading the word about our unique educational offerings at the Delaware Press Association's Awards Banquet this year. In the brief below you can read all about the project that earned him and UD doctoral student Lisa Tossey the award.

You will also find information about the recent impacts DESG has had on economic development and education in Delaware and Washington, D.C., as well as some interesting and useful materials you can download or order listed at the bottom.

Thank you for your support of Delaware Sea Grant.

Regards,
Mohsen Badiey, Ph.D.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Advice on Marketing Oysters

Researchers from the University of Delaware recently hosted members of Delaware's oyster industry to share results of studies about how to best market their products. Those studies showed that demand for their product is strong and consumers should be ready to pay good prices once the supply arrives.

The workshop was hosted by the Center for Experimental and Applied Economics and sponsored by DESG.

AWARD: Project VIDEO Best in State

DESG Marine Education Specialist Chris Petrone and UD doctoral student Lisa Tossey won first place in the audiovisuals category of the Delaware Press Association's 2017 Communications Contest for Project VIDEO, a virtual reality tour of the ocean drilling research vessel JOIDES Resolution.

The "virtual field trip" can be viewed with a web browser here or by using the RoundMe app and searching for JOIDES. Other VR experiences created by Tossey and Petrone are available by searching for DESeaGrant.
EDUCATION: Chesapeake Bay Bowl

On Feb. 4, 60 high school students gathered at the UD's Virden Center on the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes to compete in the 20th Annual Chesapeake Bay Bowl. Hosted this year by DESG and CEOE, teams of five high school students demonstrated their marine science expertise in the annual competition by competing in round robin buzzer questions and short answer essay questions.
MARINE POLICY: Delaware Sea Grant selects two Knauss Fellows

UD graduate student Lauren Knapp and Katrina Tomacek, who earned a doctoral degree in law at American University in May 2016, were selected by DESG for the prestigious Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship in Washington, D.C. Knapp will spend a year as a research adviser fellow with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Engineer Research and Development Center, and Tomacek will serve as an executive fellow for NOAA's Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement.

Sea Talk - Rain Gardens
Rain gardens can serve as beautiful and important tools for protecting Delaware's waterways by collecting stormwater runoff from hard surfaces like driveways and allowing it to slowly percolate back into the ground. This helps to filter out nutrients and pollutants that might otherwise flow directly into local streams and bays.
