The Role of Hope & Faith

Angela Davis said "I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept." What role does hope and faith have in changing things we cannot accept?

Is progress measured in baby steps enough? How do we choose between revolution or reformation or readjustment or re-planning?

Adult Religious Exploration

Sunday, December 17, 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Gallery

In keeping with our focus this month on the 6th Principle - "The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all" - and on the work of our shared plate organization - Second Harvest Food Bank - we will show the following inspirational 12-minute TED Talk with discussion to follow.

How urban architecture is transforming Detroit
There's something amazing growing in the city of Detroit: healthy, accessible, delicious, fresh food. In a spirited talk, fearless farmer Devita Davison explains how features of Detroit's decay actually make it an ideal spot for urban agriculture. Join Davison for a walk through neighborhoods in transformation as she shares stories of opportunity and hope. "These aren't plots of land where we're just growing tomatoes and carrots," Davison says. "We're building social cohesion as well as providing healthy, fresh food."

Devita Davison is a food activist.  At FoodLab Detroit, Devita supports local entrepreneurs and imagines a new future for food justice.

Unitarian Universalist Principle Focus: "The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all"

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has selected Second Harvest Food Bank as our beneficiary organization for the shared plate collection in December. Founded in 1972, Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County was the first food bank in California and is the second oldest in the nation. Their mission is to end hunger and malnutrition in our county by educating and involving the community.

Throughout the month, we will share information and stories that underscore how access to food and nutrition is a global issue.

Exploring the Bible
A four-session study group led by Robert Strayer

This is a continuation from the last four sessions of the "Exploring the Bible" study group led by Bob Strayer earlier this year. Each session looks at a passage of the Bible with a focus on how it resonates in our lives today and on its relevance to our contemporary context. This is not an academic study, but rather an exploration of how the language of the Bible speaks to us now and how it can inform our spiritual quest.

Bob Strayer has been a well-received guest speaker numerous times at our Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sunday service. He has a Ph.D in History from UW Madison. He is a long time professor of world history, with a particular interest in religious themes; author of "Ways of the World", a widely used world history textbook; a participant in various interfaith activities; and a member of La Selva Beach Community Church and Progressive Christian Forum.

Maximum number of participants: 12
4 x 1-1/2 hour sessions, 2-times per month in January and February.
Location: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

Please email Ann at [email protected] if you are interested in joining the group for the next four sessions. Day/time to be determined based on participants' availability.

For a copy of Bob's talk on "Religion 101" that he gave at the Fellowship on November 5, is  here .
