MHLS Announcements
Recommend to Library Function now Live in the MHLS eBook and Downloadable audiobook collection (OverDrive):   At the March MHLS Directors Association meeting, directors voted to have the built-in OverDrive 'Recommend to Library' function turned on, so that individual libraries would be able to get recommendations from their patrons of OverDrive titles that would like the library to purchase.

What patrons see: In the OverDrive interface at https://mhls.overdrive.com there is now an automatically generated preview row (which shows up at the bottom of search results pages) displaying similar titles that are not owned by the collection, with the heading "Didn't find what you're looking for? We can add titles that aren't in the collection to your search results so you can recommend them."

When a patron clicks on a title they want to recommend, they see a 'Recommend' button. When making a recommendation, a patron can choose to be notified if the title is purchased and/or be automatically placed on the waiting list. At this point, patrons are each limited to four (4) recommendations per month. Details for the OverDrive administrator at your library on how to manage this new function are available through OverDrive Marketplace Help at https://help.marketplace.overdrive.com.

Happy National Library Workers Day! Today is a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers. For more information visit http://ala-apa.org/nlwd/ and follow hashtag #nlwd17.

Sustainable Libraries
Stay Tuned for News About State and Federal Library Aid:
  • New York State Budget: As the MHLS Bulletin goes to press this week, word from Albany indicates that a budget deal has been struck. Stay tuned for a full report in next week's MHLS Bulletin. Whatever happens, THANK YOU for all of your efforts to get the word out to fight against the Governor's proposed cut and make the case for an increase to State Aid for Public Library Construction. Our voice is stronger when we are all using the same message and all indicators are that our message was heard in Albany. We'll see where we land in the new budget, but whatever gains are there are thanks to the combined efforts of the New York Library Community led by the "voice of the library community," the New York Library Association.
  • Thank you to all MHLS-area library advocates who spoke up to their Congressmen about federal funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The American Library Association reports that Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney of the 18th Congressional District signed on to the "Dear Appropriator" letter to protect Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) funds, as requested. Congressman John Faso of the 19th Congressional District did not sign on to the letter as requested. There is still a long way to go to save IMLS funding...
