Imagine a bird whose perfect winter home is dense cedar forest, near abundant fresh water... The Bohemian Waxwing is just such a bird, and Washington Island is that perfect winter home. In the coming months, Door County's shorelines, islands and wild places will offer a resting spot or home to hundreds of species of migrating and nesting birds. The loss of habitat is one of the greatest threats to many birds and gives greater meaning to the land protection work of the Door County Land Trust.
Below, you will find four ways you can volunteer to protect and restore habitat for birds, plants and animals. Get your hands dirty while we "spruce" up our native landscape. Or, grab your shovel and join us to plant native choke-cherry and bird-friendly shrubs at the Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve. Our nature preserves are "for the birds"!

Native Landscaping "Spruce"-Up

Are you looking for fun, fresh air and the opportunity to dig in to some wildness right here in the middle of the city? Join us to help "spruce" up the native woodland landscape at the Door County Land Trust's Sturgeon Bay office. There are many tasks to choose from: pruning, edging, raking and more! Garden tools will be provided, but bring your own if you like. Experts from Door Landscape and Nursery will teach us to identify our Door County native plants and how they can be used in an urban setting.
We'll start at 9:00 am and will be working until noon, but feel free to arrive on your own schedule. Morning goodies and beverages will be provided. To sign up, send an email to [email protected].

Join us for an afternoon of tree planting to celebrate Earth Week! We are continuing our efforts to plant native seedlings at our Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve. Please meet just north of the preserve parking area on County Road G. Please park along the west side of the road. We will plant until 3:00 or until all the seedlings are planted.

What does hosting or co-hosting an event entail? We'll guide you through the process, which may be as simple as hosting a brunch, lunch or dinner for a small group or helping at an event that is already planned.

The Door County Land Trust is a local, non-profit organization working to preserve Door County's open spaces, scenic beauty and ecological integrity. The Land Trust has protected more than 7,600 acres and is supported by more than 2,200 members.
Door County Land Trust nature preserves are open to the public at no charge for hiking, cross-country skiing, wildlife observation, some forms of hunting, and other low-impact, non-motorized recreational activities.
