St. Martin's Stands to Support Refugees
By Sophie Smal, Communications Coordinator
With immigration presenting a major debate in today's politics, St. Martin's, Davis, decided to support and spread awareness about Episcopal Migration Ministry for their 2017 Lenten project.
"We had already selected EMM, and then a couple of [presidential] executive orders came out [regarding immigration] so it increased our determination," Judith Stanley, chair of the Social Justice and Outreach Commission, for St. Martin's said.
Every year, the commission's goals for their Lenten project include bringing visibility to a certain topic for their congregation and community, and also raising money for an organization that reaches out to those in need.
It's predicted that with President Donald Trump's executive order, the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. in 2017 will drop from 110,000 to 50,000. Consequently, the organizations that work with current and future refugees, such as EMM, will be at risk.
This month EMM started a fundraising campaign, called "Stand to Support Refugees," aimed at raising enough funds for the organization to remain intact.
Join St. Martin's in their Lenten project to fund the EMM.

Lori Korleski Richardson to Join Office of the Bishop Staff
We are pleased to announcethat Lori Korleski Richardson joins the Office of the Bishop Staff as Interim Communications Director, beginning this week. Lori worked at The Sacramento Bee for 21 years as an editor and writer before leaving in 2008 and moving to Charlottesville, Virginia, where her husband, the Rev. James Richardson, was the ninth rector of St. Paul's Memorial Church. They returned to The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California in 2014 when Jim was appointed as priest-in-charge of Incarnation, Santa Rosa.
In a surprise turn of events, our communications director, Paula Schaap, has accepted an offer to return to the newsroom in New York City. We are sad to see Paula go, yet excited for her new adventure and wish her all the best as she brings her gifts to bear at a time when journalism and the economic news is at the heart of our political landscape.
To get in touch with Lori call her at 916-442-6918 ext. 226 or send her an e-mail at [email protected].

Bishop's Book for Lent and Lenten Formation Resources
Bishop Barry has chosen "Toxic Charity," by Robert Lupton, as the Bishop's Book for Spring and Lent. The book discusses ways in which the growing trend of service projects and trips (what Lupton calls the growing "compassion industry") can be damaging and toxic to the people they are intended to help.
To help your congregation or other group with your reading and discussion of the Bishop's Book, the Rev. Anne Clarke has prepared a companion guide,
available here. You can read her essay about her approach to studying the Bishop's Book by

Lenten Faith Formation Resources for 2017 are available to download and share with others.

2017 Bible Challenge - Chu
rches Share Their Stories
By the Rev. Anne Clarke, Lifelong Christian Formation Coordinator
In 2013, I remember holding up my Bible-app-equipped cell phone and joining the Bishop's Bible challenge, along with many others around our diocese hoping to spend the coming year traveling through every book and chapter of the Bible. Since then, we've continued this practice of reading the Bible together.
This year, we want to celebrate and learn from each other about the many ways that people in our diocese read the Bible together. For my part, I see it as a way to share part of the joy of my work every day; I get to see the various creative, faithful and fun ways people from our diocese have found to read our sacred stories.
These practices are transformative and sustaining to us as people of faith. This year, we'll tell stories of how and why we read the Bible, and the ways in which it has changed us. We hope this will be a chance to learn from each other, to share ideas and encouragement, and to tell our Bible stories outside the walls of our churches.
We are starting with
St. Andrew's, Antelope, and their midweek Bible study. I first visited them about a year ago and wish I could join them every week. There's nothing particularly glamorous about the way they gather -- just a group of people around a conference table -- but they are one of the most enthusiastic groups of Bible readers I have ever met. They're brimming with energy and good humor. I wanted you all to meet them -- and now you have a chance to.
Click here to view a short story and photo essay about St. Andrew's Bible study. Let us know what you think, and participate by sharing your own practices around Bible study on social media using #norcalbible, or by emailing me at
