On March 15, the Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District board voted to participate in the Santa Rosa Plain Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA). The decision to join means that 10-11 entities are participating in formation of the GSA in Santa Rosa Plain: County of Sonoma, Sonoma County Water Agency, Sonoma Resource Conservation District, Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District, cities of Cotati, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, the Town of Windsor, and the mutual- and PUC-regulated water districts. Gold Ridge RCD looks forward to representing its constituents’ perspectives to the best of its ability while on the GSA.
What are Groundwater Sustainability Agencies?
In September 2014, Governor Brown signed legislation requiring that California’s critical groundwater resources be sustainably managed by local agencies. The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) gives local agencies powers to sustainably manage groundwater over the long-term, and requires Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) be developed for medium- and high-priority groundwater basins. In Sonoma County, the State has designated three of the county’s 14 basins and sub-basins as medium-priority: Santa Rosa Plain, Sonoma Valley, and Petaluma Valley. These three basins are required to comply with the Act.
