From the President
Dear Federation Friends,
WOW, AWESOME, COOL, SPECTACULAR, WONDERFUL, and BEAUTIFUL are just a few of the superlatives used to describe our Winter Meeting last week in Charleston, SC. This was the Federation's first meeting in South Carolina, but I doubt it will be the last. The sun shone for us all week with absolutely perfect weather and everyone was able to get out and enjoy the sights, sounds, and food of the Holy City.
Great meetings come from great leadership and I want to compliment and applaud Michael and Lee Scott. Their approach to the meeting in Charleston was to make it unforgettable, they succeeded in that goal. It will long be remembered in the annals of the FDCC as a great meeting. Their hospitality and attention to detail made it a pure joy for all of those who attended. I bet if we took a vote, everyone would vote for them to do it again in Charleston and soon. On behalf of the Federation thanks to Michael and Lee for their dedication, sacrifice and hard work on this meeting which was truly "Above & Beyond"!

It was an excellent meeting!
A record crowd attended the 2017 Winter Meeting in Charleston two weeks ago, bringing great fellowship and outstanding continuing education - along with wonderful weather. Truly, all 546 in the Federation family who traveled to the meeting must have packed raincoats, galoshes and umbrellas because not a drop of rain was felt the entire week. The hotel and event venues really pulled out the stops to throw some great parties. What was your favorite?
Clark Hudson's program was cutting edge, high energy, and at many times poignant - handkerchiefs were in full use multiple times, not to mention the special surprises that started the plenary each day.
Be on the lookout for the convention survey, which will be coming out in the next day. Please do respond to it, especially if you'd like to see the FDCC return to Charleston someday. The Charleston Convention and Visitor's Bureau has a new slogan: "Charleston, South Carolina - Everything You've Heard is True." We certainly hope this was borne out for all who joined us there.

MONTREUX HOTEL INFORMATION UPDATE
For legal, safety and security reasons, The Montreux Palace standard rooms (Fairmont) are single or double occupancy, regardless of the age. In the Deluxe category, rooms can be maximum triple occupancy. The 3rd person is free if below 12 years of age, CHF 40/night if between 13-17 years of age and CHF 80 if 18 or above. For quadruple the hotel can make exceptions in some of the suites. Please contact the hotel directly for availability and additional costs.

Federation Triumphs
Sean W. Martin, Carr Allison, Chattanooga, TN, recently obtained summary judgment in a premises liability case. The plaintiff entered the defendant's dressing room to try on clothing for her business trip to Alaska. When she tried to exit to view herself in the mirror, she realized she was trapped in the dressing room by another customer's clothes-laden shopping cart. After a polite request, the customer moved the cart, but only slightly. Instead of making a second request of the customer or pushing the shopping cart out of the way herself, the plaintiff decided to squeeze through the small gap between the doorway and the clothes-laden shopping cart. In so doing, her foot got stuck under the cart, causing her to fall to the ground. The plaintiff sued, claiming the cart was a dangerous condition because the clothes hid the structure of the cart. The defendant moved for summary judgment under the theory that shopping carts are ubiquitous business features and not a dangerous condition. The United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee granted the motion. No appeal was taken.
