Armstrong Alumni Newsletter
Alumni Panel at Armstrong
James Appleby
On Tuesday, November 21st Armstrong hosted its Annual Career Day.  Students in grades 5-8 rotated to hear presentations from guest presenters.  This year, five of the presenters were alumni back to share the story of their journey from Armstrong.  All five credited Armstrong with helping them start on a path toward a rewarding career.

Our alumni guests included:

Gary Schoenfeld , a drama producer and director of theater at Spindrift School who attended Armstrong for 7th and 8th grade from 2006-2008.

James Appleby, an actor currently performing in Beach Blanket Babylon, who attended Armstrong for 4th to 8th grade from 1995 to 2000.

Bo Felix , a veterinarian and equine dentist who attended Armstrong for grades 3 to 5, leaving in 1992 to attend boarding school where he was so prepared he skipped 8th grade before returning to public high school.

Zach Adamis , who spoke about his work at Disneyland, before he returned to join the Armstrong faculty this fall, in the physical education department.  Zach was at Armstrong from grades 6 to 8, graduating in 2006.

Amy Young , in her second career day presentation.  Amy is an EMT and SWAT medic in Contra Costa County who attended Armstrong for grades 6 to 8 in 2004-2007.

I was able to hear all our Alumni presenters and was so moved by their stories. Each spoke powerfully about the time they spent at Armstrong and the impact it had on their life today. It was compelling to hear that all five have found joy in careers that allowed them to maximize their gifts.  They were open and honest with current Armstrong students about their struggles to succeed and offered powerful advice.  This article can't do justice to their presentations, but I share few thought from each of them below.

Bo Felix advice to current Armstrong students
  1.  You need to have a dream.
  2. To achieve your dream you need to set specific goals.
  3. Don't listen to people who tell you you can't succeed.
  4. How hard you are willing to work is more important than how talented you are.
  5. Don't let fear of failure hold you back.

Gary Schoenfeld
said that oftentimes you head off to do one thing and other opportunities happen.  " Keep your eyes open to these opportunities.  Armstrong is preparing you well to take advantage of them."  And he also told 8th graders to know what they need and be ready for to ask for it in high school.

Amy Young
shared that an instructor in her EMT program told her that every fantastic EMT he had ever encountered was dyslexic.  When she was concerned by the amount of reading and the tests involved in the training program, he told her not to look for other programs.  And the instructor was right.  Amy said that while she is not a strong reader and she is a fearful test-taker and though her program required weekly tests from a large textbook she finished 1st in her class.  She cajoled our students to use their strengths!

James Appleby
introduced himself as JM - Just Me - and told the students to love themselves and "just be me". He said while he hated reading in school, his career in theater has helped him to "fall in love" with the power of words.

Zach Adamis
spoke about working at the "happiest place on earth" and then returning to as a P.E. teacher at Armstrong.  At Disney he learned to create magic with "a little faith, trust, and pixie dust."  And his advice to Armstrong students is that "while you never know where life will take you, enjoy the ride."
