On a Mission
Middle School Students Perform Crowd-Pleasing Favorite
On March 2, Lakehill's seventh and eighth grade musical theater students brought Guys and Dolls, Jr. to the Lakehill stage.

An adaptation of the show considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Frank Loesser's brassy, immortal score and witty book makes the show a perennial crowd-pleaser.

Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls, Jr.  introduces us to colorful characters who have become musical theater legends: Sarah Brown, the upright, but uptight "mission doll"; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, a nightclub performer whose chronic flu is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating dice game.

Keegan Clendenin led the outstanding cast as Sky Masterson. His singing voice and stage presence were perfectly in tune. Christian Barefoot displayed a spot-on city accent and great comic timing as Nathan Detroit.  Zoe Williams was an endearing  Sarah Brown, and  Ella Berry was a showstopper as Miss Adelaide.

Other notable performers include both Asher Chamoy and Spencer Neill as Nicely-Nicely Johnson and Benny Southstreet. Chamoy provided a strong rendition of the classic number "Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat." Matthew McCall was a terrific Big Jule, and  Marissa Rubio was strong as General Cartwright. Mika Davis gave a convincing performance as  Police Lt. Brannigan, on a mission to determine the location of the nightly crap game. The Mission Band members and the Hot Box girls all had their moment to shine.

The musical was co-directed by Linda Booth and Tracy Herron. " Guys and Dolls, although written in 1950, is a timeless musical with components that relate to every age," said Booth. "The students really seemed to enjoy preparing it and we had a great time teaching it. Guys and Dolls, Jr. was the first musical ever performed at Lakehill, and I hope it will be performed again."

Upper School Competes in Science Olympiad
On March 4, the Lakehill Science Club participated in the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Science Olympiad at North Lake College. The Science Olympiad is a team competition in which schools compete in various events to test their retention and practical application of their science training.

Lakehill students participated in individual events, such as building and testing the performance of wooden machines and vehicles, creating video games with simple coding programs, identifying invasive species, human anatomy, microbes, and rocks and minerals, solving math puzzles, and playing science vocabulary games, to name a few. In Lakehill's second year of competition, the 17 participants brought home medals in four events.

Alex Tracy and Lily Turner earned medals for placing fourth  in the Anatomy and Physiology event, while Joanna Chen and Zain Imam earned fourth  in the Invasive Species event. Tillie McCoskey and Steven Murff finished fifth  in Picture This (think Pictionary for science terms), and Kate Langley and Murff finished fifth  in Optics (an event using mirrors to deflect a laser beam around obstacles to reach a target).

Other competitors were Sophia Liu, Kumail Imam, Charity Abengowe, Arjun Agrawal, Christian Druebert, Blake Farokhnia, Ben Gillman, Greg Gillman, Luke Jerome, and Charlie Pippen

"It was really an eye-opening experience for me," said Tracy, "Mr. Holman prepared us well for the competition with great attention to detail. I am more confident about my choice of a  future career in science."

"I am extremely proud of all the students who competed," said sponsor Jeremy Holman. "Their efforts have been instrumental in expanding our science program at Lakehill."

State of Debate
Middle School Earns Honors at State Debate Tournament
Lakehill's Middle School Debate team participated in the 70th Annual Junior Youth and Government State Conference, held March 3-5 at the State Capitol in Austin.

Seventh grade team members Ashton Abbott-Sharifi, Sumner Born, Alexander Dondis, Harris Jones, Cullen McCaleb, Spencer Neill, Prahlad Pant, and Mara Sandberg and sixth grade team members  Oliver Adams, Anna Knickle, James McKinney, and Katie Rich  represented  Lakehill.

Students compete as mock legislators using the actual State House and Senate Chambers as well as other conference rooms in the Capitol. Each student must draft a bill or proposal on a matter of state law and argue for its passage. To do this effectively, students must learn procedural rules and how to respond to questions and suggested amendments from delegates. They must also learn parliamentary procedure, how to question other delegates, and how to draft pro/con arguments and amendments.

All wrote and presented legislative bills which they practiced at the District Conference in December. Eleven bills passed in committee debate process. The Lakehill team was recognized as a Premier Delegation for the third consecutive year.

Lakehill teacher Amanda Rasbury and parent Paula Gillman provided excellent leadership as club sponsors this year. "I was blown away by the poise and perseverance of this mostly inexperienced group of debate students," said Gillman. "I think that they learned a lot and had fun along the way. We are looking forward to a mostly seasoned team next year."

Construction Corner
Update from Headmaster Roger Perry
This has been an active week for our building project.

The brickwork in the courtyard area has been completed, and the masons will soon begin work on the North side of the building. The stucco installers are making good progress on the courtyard side of the building.

Over Spring Break, the two buildings will be connected on the basement and main floors. The electrical system will be connected. The will be no power to the main campus for a few days over the break. Everyone should be able to see some major differences in the exterior walls when we return.

Best wishes for a wonderful spring break!

Senior Spotlight
National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Charlie Pippen

Charlie Pippen has attended Lakehill since kindergarten. During his time here, he has participated in many different activities such as baseball, Academic WorldQuest, and National Honor Society. He is also currently involved in Science Club, Debate, and Student Council.

Throughout his thirteen years of memories, his favorite is building the DNA Project in Middle School Science. It was fun for him, even though the candy from his design fell over. He loves performing, and has participated in Musical Theater and Drama when his schedule has allowed since seventh grade. His main interests outside of school are baseball, reading, and video games.

Charlie has been a member of the Lakehill baseball team since seventh grade and was named Academic All-State last year. His favorite classes are Biology, Spanish, Advanced Placement U.S. History, and any Science class.

Charlie has won many incredible awards including the Headmaster's Honor Award consistently every year for good grades. He is involved in community service for the school as well, and has been recognized with the President's Volunteer Service Award and the Prudential Spirit of Community Award two years in a row. He has traveled to Namibia twice to work for the Kayengona School, teaching and delivering supplies. Even when he is not there, he still holds book, clothing, and school supply drives with his family.

Charlie hopes to attend Trinity University, Southwestern University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Austin, College of Wooster, or Northwestern University. He wants to major in Biology while staying on the Pre-Medical track to be a physician.

Charlie has several major pieces of advice for young Warriors: "Keep track of your assignments, inspired by Mr. Hagood saying, 'Read or bleed!' Read and go through the instructions, inspired by Ms. Mayo saying, 'Read the destructions.'" Charlie also says be responsible and accountable for your actions and stay true to not just yourself, but everyone else as well.
