APRIL 2017 NEWSLETTER
Flurries are in the forecast, but plan to be           on a trail on Saturday, April 8.
Take pictures and send them to us, please!

Spring brings us out of our houses, ready to be active in the out of doors.  Unfortunately, not everyone has good intentions.   We are dismayed by the lack of respect and courtesy to our trails.   Please help us put a stop to any and all levels of vandalism by letting us know what you observe.  Be our eyes and ears.  Send any information you may have to waynerailstotrails@gmail.com

At the same time, we know there are those who regularly take time to move debris, pick up litter and take extra effort to keep our trails looking good.  Thank you!

RTWC Board Member Honored
Growing Healthy Habits Champion

Jenni Reusser, a native of Orrville, was honored at the Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet with the Dr. Andrew Naumoff Growing Healthy Habits Champion Award. Her nomination notes that Jenni has always taken an interest in being active. She has a knack for keeping balance in her life so that she has time for her family, her church, and herself. This is not easy for someone who is so active volunteering in the community.

Jenni, a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, has taught fitness classes at the Orrville YMCA for 37 years. She is a member of the Board of Rails-to-Trails of Wayne County, the Growing Healthy Habits Coalition, the Orrville High School Alumni  Association Board, and the Wayne County Community Foundation Women's Fund Advisory Committee.

A contribution in the amount of $250 will be made in Jenni's honor to Rails-to-Trails of Wayne County.

Winkler Brothers
Up to the Challenge

In March, Keith Winkler, a RTWC Board Member, and his brother Kevin Winkler, ran the Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam 1/2 Marathon for their fourth time. On the following day they rode bikes on the same trail to Hoover Dam.

This is an old railroad bed converted to a bike and running trail. The railroad was originally used to haul supplies from Boulder City, Nevada to Hoover Dam for construction of the Hoover Dam during the 1930's.

Let's Talk Trails
2017 Annual Meeting

After a very active year, we are looking forward
to our annual meeting and we hope you will join us.

There will be a short business meeting,
including updates on our trails.

We are especially excited about our special guest speaker,
Mark. J. Looney, author of the book "A Path Through Ohio."

Looney, a veteran cyclist, journeyed across the newly opened
Ohio to Erie trail, traveling south from Cleveland to Cincinnati.

In the book, he weaves thirty years of bicycle touring experience, including Road Rules, historical state markers and
long forgotten history into to his fascinating dialogue.

As always, the event is free and reservations are not required.
There will be light refreshments in the lobby.
We are grateful to Orrville High School for hosting the event.

Heartland Trail Public Meeting
April 6, 2017

RTWC has submitted a grant application to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in hopes of receiving funding for the next phase of The Heartland Trail.  See above the notice recently sent to abutting property owners for the section included in the application,
Forrer Road to Market Street in Marshallville.

As a requirement of the grant, we must hold a public meeting to allow for review and comment on the plans.    We have set this meeting for Thursday, April 6, from 2-4 at Orrville City Hall.  Kristin Endsley and Becky Jewell will be there to answer questions.

GETAWAY GROUP RIDE - Lake to River Greenway - June 10 & 11

The Trail runs from Ashtabula, Ohio to Lisbon, Ohio. The trail is not complete yet, so it does include road sections (including about 5 miles on a State Highway) and some of the route in Warren is on low traffic streets.  The ride is about 90 miles total, with about 50 the first day and an overnight in Warren at the Best Western Hotel.

The trip cost, shared room, is $175 per person, which includes a donation of $50 to R.T.W.C., transportation for you and your bike from Orrville to Ashtabula and from Lisbon back to Orrville, along with luggage transport each day, and overnight stay in Warren and breakfast Sunday morning. Lunches and supper not included.

The deadline for registration is April 15. Registration is $75. The balance is due May 10.

Call 330.466.5149 or email Keith Workman keith2786@gmail.com  with questions or to reserve a spot.
