This first quarter of the year has flown by! It is incredible to believe it's April and we are welcoming Spring.
We had a successful 7th annual California Breastfeeding Summit in Anaheim at the end of January with 500 attendees.
Thank you to everyone who attended, presente
d, exhibited, and volunteered! Of the many ex
periences and lessons we shared together, what emerged was a renewed
commitment to removing all barriers to breastfeeding specifically by identifying and addressing the root causes of racial breastfeeding disparities. Yes, it is easy to agree that we all want equitable breastfeeding support for all women in California. But to accomplish that, we have to spend the time examining the root causes for the disparities and inequities and be part of the solutions. This work is not easy and might be uncomfortable, but it is necessary. Frost said, "The only way out is through," and the only way through is together.

The 2017 Summit presentations are now posted on the CBC website. Take advantage of this opportunity to view and download all of the great presentations from the Summit.
Since the summit we have three newly designated Baby-Friendly Hospitals. A big congratulations to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (January), Marin General Hospital (February), and Memorial Hospital of Gardena (February)! The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is one of the solutions to creating breastfeeding equity in California.
May 23rd at the State Capitol is the Mother-Baby Family Workplace Award Ceremony. Please nominate businesses in your area that have a workplace lactation accommodation policy or guidelines, and who support their employees to continue breastfeeding when returning to work. More info available in this newsletter.

Sign the Petition! Tell Amtrak to "get on board" with breastfeeding-supportive policies
|
On February 12, 2017, mother-of-three Moon Afrykayn Moon was traveling to Pittsburgh from Los Angeles on Amtrak and started to breastfeed her hungry child. She was not disruptive, and not doing anything illegal. Nonetheless, she was embarrassed, harassed, and had her legal rights violated by conductor Robert Baker and staff. They attempted to have her cover up and repeatedly told her to stop "exposing" herself on a "family-oriented train."
She was told to cover herself on "the conductor's train."
Moon started a petition (initial goal of 50,000, then 100,000 signatures) to ask Amtrak:
1. Post on their website and social media sites
a detailed breastfeeding policy that reflects the federal and other state laws to protect the breastfeeding mother.
2.
Employees get infractions for violating the breastfeeding policy. The infractions/punishment increase with continuous violations of said policy.
3.
Conductor Robert Baker and the attendant publicly apologize to me for attempting to force me to cover up and speaking to me in a scolding manner.

 The deadline to apply for scholarships for the 7th National Breastfeeding Coalitions Conference (NBCC) is Friday, May 5th, 2017. The conference will be held August 4-6 in Arlington, Virginia. The USBC is offering two scholarships: Legacy Scholarship awarded to 2 emerging coalition leaders, and Tribal/Native Trailblazer Scholarship awarded to emerging leaders in tribal/native communities.

Join the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) for the fifth webinar in their
Public Health Breastfeeding Series on April 19th 11am-12:30pm. This
webinar will explore how breastfeeding has been woven into the performance measures of national public health programs, such as Title V, Healthy Start, Early Head Start, and Maternal Infant and Early Childhood and Home Visiting (MIECHV). The webinar will address how frontline public health professionals can engage these programs to advance breastfeeding initiatives at the community level. Presenters include:

Mother-Baby Friendly Workplace Awards - Call for Nominations!
On May 23rd at the State Capital, the California Breastfeeding Coalition will recognize businesses for their exemplary efforts to support lactating employees by creating breastfeeding policies, ensuring all staff are aware of their polices and talking with expectant mothers about accommodating their breastfeeding needs when they return to work. These criteria ensure compliance with existing California and Federal laws requiring employers to provide time and space for employees who want to express their milk.

 Produced by the California Department of Public Health (Dec 2016) and authored by Suzanne Haydu, MPH, RD and Ryan Gamba, MPH, the California Infant Feeding Guide serves as a comprehensive resource for feeding children ages birth to one year. With exclusive breastfeeding as the key foundation and always through the lens of breastmilk-feeding, the guide covers a wide range of subjects such as human milk banking, cup or bottle feeding methods, feeding recommendations and nutrient needs according to development stages, food sensitivities, and indications of and safe preparation of commercial artificial milk substitutes.

On Tuesday, April 4th HMHB of San Benito hosted, "The Sacred Hour and Beyond" workshop at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Attended by 75 participants, the featured speaker was Raylene M. Phillips, MD, MA, IBCLC, FABM, FAAP. Dr. Phillips is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Loma Linda
University Children's Hospital - Division of Neonatology.
Dr. Phillips spoke about the sacred hour of uninterrupted skin-to-skin immediately after birth, and the many physiological and emotional benefits for mother and child, as well as its facilitation of an optimal start to exclusive breastfeeding. Dr. Phillips additionally spoke about the time "beyond the sacred hour," and what can be done to support exclusive breastfeeding in the early postpartum period.

Attendee Rene Stewart RN, from workshop sponsor Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, Women's Center shared, "It was an excellent workshop and beautiful venue. We are excited to implement the best care practices that were presented and look forward to more workshops in the future."

The New Parent Leave Act would provide up to 12 weeks of job-protected maternity leave and paternity leave for more California employees.
The bill passed out of Senate Labor & Industrial Relations and Senate Judicial Committees. The bill is currently in Senate Appropriations waiting a for hearing date.
ACTION: The
California Work & Family Coalition is organizing Senate District visits. They are seeking breastfeeding advocates to participate in these district visit. This is a great opportunity to educate your State Senator about how parental leave is a crucial part of breastfeeding support. Email

"The Shame of the Nursing Mother" Video Highlights The Kind Of Breastfeeding Shaming We Don't Really Talk About

Photographer Megan Soto is the mother of
a 6-year-old, 3-year-old and 22-month-old and has dealt with negative experiences during her
breastfeeding
journey, from both family and strangers. S
oto decided to channel her struggles into a creative project. On March 15, she posted a powerful video called "The Shame of the Nursing Mother."
The photographer compiled a handful of those responses to make the video, which is nearing 75,000 views on Facebook.
"Hopefully this gives some perspective in terms of the isolation that breastfeeding mothers face," Soto told HuffPost. "I hope that it encourages people to be more inclusive both among their loved ones and among strangers. With this video I wanted to shine a light on how asking mothers hide while breastfeeding really looks and feels."
As the video captioning notes at the end, "No one ever asked me to miss out of life when I was formula feeding. Breastfeeding mothers deserve the same respect."
