Next steps for education:
Why we support funding Measure 98
Measure 98 was designed to increase our high school graduation rate and Oregon's supply of skilled workers by making vocational and career-technical education available to all high school students. This measure needs to be funded because we are already seeing significant problems due to the lack skilled workers in our communities and our graduation rates. Not only does Oregon have one of the lowest graduation rates in the country, we also have a shortage of skilled workers that our industries need in order to keep their workforce and businesses local. By providing vocational skill classes in our schools (e.g. computer science courses), our high schools help to add skilled workers to our community who are ready and able to fill these positions, we will also be able to address our graduation rates. Not only do students who take technical skill classes graduate at higher rates (22% higher) than students who do not, they also enter the workforce after high school and find good paying jobs or enter college with skills necessary to make them successful. Hence, the Legislature must fund Measure 98 to benefit students and our future workforce.
