Welcome to Spring 2015
I am not quite sure what has been happening with our friend Mother Nature but its possible she has forgotten to set her alarm clock! It seems as if Old Man Winter is really enjoying his time in New Jersey this year and perhaps looking for an excuse to stay a little longer. Ultimately, Mother Nature seems to be the boss and is ever so slowly providing us with warmer sunshine and longer days.
We are excited to be getting out in the field and visiting many of your fine properties. We are finally getting to do what we truly enjoy which is to provide our clients with the best possible landscape service of anyone in the industry. Please note that we've gotten off to a slow start with spring cleanups, doing as much as possible in March and early April while there was still remaining snow on the ground. We are trying our best to finish up soon and unfortunately it has been in-between April rain drops! As we begin to catch up with our fine tree pruning and work on our general garden tasks, we are also getting to do what we truly love which is working with some really great people, helping them to create truly great gardens.

In my 30+ years of working in the landscape industry, I have found that planting a tree(s) to be the most rewarding landscape project for both our customers and myself. In our industry, it is almost as close to instant gratification as you can get as evidenced by the smiles on everyone's faces when they observe the finished product. It is also a great legacy to leave behind for future generations.

Finding Peace and Serenity Under a Tree

Over this past Winter we have done a bit of research and discovered some more interesting varieties of trees, so that we may offer our customers the best possible plant material at a price that is both fair and reasonable. Shown below are a sampling of these beautiful trees, some old and some new, that may be worthy of one of your future projects. As usual, all of these plants are low maintenance, pest and disease free and will provide good value for your investment. So I invite you to take a look at a tiny portion of our vast selection of plant material and imagine your satisfaction of coming home to one or more of these trees in your yard.

| INTERESTING TREE VARIETIES to consider!
 
'Evening Light' Styrax (Japanese Snowbell) is a stunningly beautiful new cultivar of the already fabulous Japanese Snowbell collection. With glossy purple leaves and an abundance of bright white, bell-shaped flowers, this unique tree is definitely an awesome addition to an landscape!
'Englemann' Spruce
An evergreen tree indigenous to the United States offers a narrow conical to cylindrical habit with descending branches that grows slowly to 50' in cultivation. Named in honor of the 19th century physician and botanist George Englemann, this tree has unique thin, scaly, reddish-brown bark that may have a purplish tinge and dark green to blue green needles.
 
Cornus kousa 'Samaritan' is a beautiful multi-stemmed eye catcher, especially with its unique creamy white and green variegated foliage that turns to pink-burgundy hues in autumn. Brilliant white springtime blossoms and bright cherry red fruit adorn this Chinese dogwood tree that was introduced by Lake County Nursery of Ohio as one their Biblical Series.
  Not new, but tried and true! Acer saccharum, better known as the deciduous sugar maple tree that provides generations of heavenly shade during long hot summers, branches to hang the tire swing on and boasts outstanding fall foliage of bright orange, yellow and red shades. Still not convinced of its important influence in horticulture? Known for its production of maple syrup and timber, the sugar maple has earned the title of the official state tree of New York and the sugar maple leaf is proudly presented on the Canadian flag.

 Time for Turf Fertilization
Early Spring is the appropriate time for the first application of fertilizer to your turf. We have begun our installations, and will be finishing up this week and next week. If you are not on our turf fertilization route, please consider having us include your lawn on our list!
Note that it is our belief to minimize any supplemental applications whenever possible. This includes addressing all cultural concerns prior to the installation of any products. This format will meet those goals while at the same time being gentle on our environment, and still provide you a strong return on your investment.

| Tick Control Applications Taking advantage of the tick's normal life cycle, we schedule control applications in June and November. This allows us to use less product, keeping your costs down, and having a reduced impact on our environment. Spraying for ticks along the perimeter of your yard will control the insects and help prevent the spread of Lyme disease. Our control measures are environmentally friendly and will help you and your family avoid contact with this pest. Please contact us if you would like to have this work completed, and we will add you to our next application route. |

Symposium:
Environmental Strategies for the Lawn & Garden
The Mendham Borough and Mendham Township Environmental Commissions will be sponsoring a symposium on environmentally friendly strategies for the lawn and garden. The program is called Lawn and Garden: how to create an environmentally friendly landscape for your home, will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 10:00 am - 12:00, noon at the Garabrant Center, 4 Wilson St., Mendham. The symposium will feature three speakers, including J. Scott Mortensen, APLD from Cedarwood Landscaping, Inc. who will be discussing environmentally friendly techniques for planting and sustaining the newly planted garden or lawn.
