What is your Dear Church Story?
|
Recently, Deacon Erin Power, Assistant to the Bishop for Synodical Life, preached a sermon for our RMS Conference Deans entitled
Dear Church. In her message, she shares of her experiences of grace, hospitality, and love in our church:
Dear Church,
I was 19 when I arrived for my first summer at one of your camps. Knowing not a soul, I drove in wondering what the heck I really got myself into. I was greeted by enthusiastic peers welcoming me, and who, even after we got to know one another, accepted me fully.
It was in these first weeks of camp I experienced radical hospitality for the first time. I was welcomed with no conditions, I was encouraged to try new things and supported through my successes and epic failures. Dear church, you are one of the only places someone is welcome, where someone belongs, simply by walking through the doors...
From Bishop Gonia: This! More of this!
Dear Church,
On Sunday afternoon I participated in the third Lutheran-Roman Catholic Common Prayer services taking place across the Rocky Mountain Synod, one part of our commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. As Lutherans and Catholics gathered together to acknowledge past sins and celebrate our ongoing journey towards unity, I witnessed the Spirit's Re•Forming work in Christ's Church. Dear Church, as I heard Archbishop Aquilla pray "that we may be one", my heart sang "This! More of this!" This is the witness of unity and love our divided world needs to hear. I pray dear Church that as part of the Spirit's Re•Forming work among us, we may find more opportunities to be transformed through prayer and worship together so that we may fully embody God's love for the sake of the world.
What is your Dear Church story?
The Spirit continues to move among and through our Church, inviting us into continued Re•Formation for the sake of proclaiming the Gospel and being church for the sake of the world today. As part of our on-going Re•Formation, we invite you to listen to the stirring of the Holy Spirit and to share with one another our own stories of re•formation, our stories of grace, our stories of church.
If you were to write a letter to our church, what would you say? What story does our church need to hear? What do we need to be reminded of? What gifts and stories do we need to re-claim?
How would you finish the letter Dear Church...
Email your letter to
Erin Power, snail mail it to the Office of the Bishop, or share on social media,
#DearChurch. With permission, stories will be compiled and shared to create our collective story as this part of Christ's Church in the Rocky Mountain Synod.

Roman Catholic & Lutheran Prayer Services to Mark Reformation 500 Years
|
Roman Catholics and Lutherans are joining together in prayer 500 years after Martin Luther’s 95 theses triggered the Reformation in 1517.
Services of Common Prayer are taking place in conjunction with seven Roman Catholic Diocese. Bishop Jim Gonia will be present at all seven locations. The liturgy will highlight the agreements that have been reached through fifty years of dialogue between Catholics and Lutherans on topics such as the Church, Ministry, and the Eucharist.
The Common Prayer is structured around themes of thanksgiving, repentance, and commitment to common witness. The aim is to express the gifts of the Reformation and ask forgiveness for the division perpetuated by Christians from the two traditions.

Rev. Dr. Raymond Pickett named as Rector of PLTS
|
From President Chris Kimball:
The Rev. Dr. Raymond Pickett has accepted the position as Rector of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary of California Lutheran University and will begin his work on June 1.
Dr. Pickett comes from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC), where he is a Professor of New Testament. He has recently served as the Chair of the LSTC Faculty Executive Committee, the Chair of the Bible Division, and on the Academic Cabinet. Previously, he taught at the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest, where he served as Dean and worked with his colleagues to develop a cross-cultural curriculum that prepared all students for Latino/a ministry in various settings, including learning Spanish. He has taught in the TEEM program and is committed to this model as an effective way to form indigenous leaders.
For the past three years, Ray has chaired the committee that developed LSTC’s Public Church curriculum, which is designed to form leaders for a church that is more engaged in communities and the struggle for justice. With PLTS moving into the heart of Berkeley, his commitment to contextual theological education predicated on a robust connection between the gospel and justice will be an asset.

Prayer of the Day: Sunday, March 26
|
Fourth Sunday in Lent
Praise God that there is no sin, illness or difficulty in life that exceeds the ability of Jesus Christ-the one who reveals God's power and works to us-to forgive, heal or resolve.
Global Church Prayer for March 26: Lamb of God, who blesses all life’s journeys, travel with us through these 40 days. As Christ called his disciples and healed throughout the countryside of Palestine, open our eyes to see our call to witness to your presence in Israel and Palestine today. Guide the work of Young Adults in Global Mission in the Holy Land and strengthen relationships with local Lutheran communities. May the work of all who live in the lands where Jesus walked promote peace and reconciliation, all for your name’s sake. Amen. Download 2017 Global Church Prayer Minutes
