MRD News:
Note from MRD Board Member Mike Brown.

Since the opening of the new CRC approximately 7 weeks ago the building has been very, VERY busy.  From early in the morning until closing, people all ages and interests have been using the building and its many programs and amenities. With this new facility we can better accomplish the mission of the MRD for the citizens of Montrose. The fitness classes in the Fitzone and in the pools have been well attended.

The pool is being used recreationally in amazing numbers. The other facilities: climbing wall, racquetball courts, game area, indoor track, fitness and aerobic machines, the gym, and the child watch area and party rooms are heavily utilized throughout the day. It has been an amazing beginning and a reflection of the community feeling that this was a needed addition to our city.
I can attest to this because I am in the building 5-7 days a week. Besides my morning workout I often return for an afternoon session of pickleball. My frequent attendance has opened my eyes to another extremely important but often overlooked benefit of the CRC. It has become a meeting place for the community, a place to see old friends and to make new ones. I have observed people greeting each other and often starting the conversation by saying how long it has been since they have seen each other.

Other folks have made it a part of their regular routine to get to the CRC at the same time daily in order to exercise and make contact with friends. As a retiree, I get regular AARP publications and hardly an issue goes by without the importance of regular social contact on the physical and mental well being of seniors being discussed in one or more articles. As I prepared to write this article I did some internet research on the benefits of socialization for all ages. A 2011 study, conducted by the University of Miami Global Business Forum said that "lifestyle and attitude are significantly more important than genes in determining the vitality of our golden years."

In a retirement magazine a number of studies were summarized and increased socialization has been
shown to improve mental health, nutrition and physical health. The Senior Center, located at the Pavilion, has been providing these opportunities for a number of years and now, with the opening of the CRC there is an even greater opportunity for senior members of our community to realize the many benefits of regular activity and exercise. These benefits are not limited to the senior segment of our community.

Parents, young adults and children all can benefit from a place to gather, connect and develop a sense of community. This wonderful building has become an important focus for all our community. During the weeks prior to our opening a number of Board members helped the staff at the CRC out by conducting tours. With the move to a new location (in the middle of winter), and all the new systems, procedures, and amenities to become familiar with, the staff was overloaded. The number of people that took tours was staggering, it was a nonstop process for 3 weeks. And it was a great opportunity for us, as Board members, to listen to what the citizens of Montrose had to say about our new facility. The tours were informative, fun and also gave me a chance to meet many new folks. Now, when I am in the building I see many of these same people using the CRC on a regular basis.

If you have not yet been in the building to see what we have to offer and to use any or all of the facilities, I invite you to do so. The Montrose community is very proud of the CRC and once you step in the door you will see why. I am looking forward to seeing you there.
Thank you.

The Field House Construction is Progressing!

This shows the New Hallway through the old women's locker room.
This maximizes the length of the indoor turf field.

The CRC site work is heating up with the warmer weather!  Below are pictures of the new irrigation pond, the only development on the south side of the canal.  This will not be publicly accessible, but it is a nice amenity for the outdoor track.  It also is sized big enough to irrigate the site at full build out.

CRC Phase II is making progress!  Thank you to the Western Colorado Conservation Corp. and the Montrose High School Outdoor Club for helping with the perimeter trail and significant landscaping work the week March 20th!

Group Personal Training

Do not forget that the Montrose Recreation District offers small group personal training. This is a great way for you to split the cost of a personal trainer with 1-3 other people. If you and a friend (or a few friends) are interested in working out together with a trainer, please give John Wagner, our Fitness Supervisor, a call at (970) 497-8565 . If you are interested in small group training but unable to work out with friends, please let us know. We will set you up in a small group with 1-3 other individuals who are looking to boost accountability, increase workout enjoyment, make friends, and reduce the cost of working with a trainer.

Costs for small group training for annual pass holders are $300 per person for 3 sessions each week for a month (12 sessions total) and $200 per person for 2 sessions each week for a month (8 sessions total). Non-members can work out in one of our small groups as well. Costs for non pass holders are $360 per person for 3 sessions each week for the month and $240 per person for 2 sessions each week for the month.
