world down syndrome day 2017
World Down Syndrome Day
March 21, 2017

Today, March 21, is World Down Syndrome Day - a day when the value and promise of people with this condition are celebrated. This year, the focus is on enabling people with Down syndrome, and those who advocate for them, to speak up, be heard, and influence governmental policy and action to ensure they are included on a full and equal basis with others.

The date-the 21st day of the 3rd month-was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes the syndrome.

Enjoy this touching video entitled, "Dear Future Mom" created to encourage future moms of babies with Down syndrome.

There are approximately 400,000 people in the U.S. living with Down syndrome. It affects people of all genders, ethnicities and economic levels. It is the most commonly occurring genetic condition, with one in every 691 babies born with the disability.

Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good medical care and positive support from family, friends and the community at large enable people with Down syndrome to develop  their potential and lead fulfilling lives.

Since the introduction of prenatal screening for genetic abnormalities pre-born babies with Down syndrome are often aborted. Too many families believe the lie that bringing a child with Down syndrome into the world is cruel to the child, a drain to society and an unbearable burden to the family.

In opposition to this heinous practice Georgia Right to Life enthusiastically supports  World Down Syndrome Day and the people, families and communities affected by Down syndrome.

"We need to help end the tragedy of aborting these precious children and recognize the value of their personhood in our culture,"  said GRTL President Ricardo Davis.

Here's what  Robb Scott, proud father of a child with Down syndrome, said,

"Down syndrome is literally one of the most beautiful things that's ever happened in my life," he said in the Facebook video. "It's fun, it's brilliant, it's amazing, it's funny, it's kind, it's loving, it's cuddly. They're great teachers, people with Down syndrome. It's not an illness."

Children with Down syndrome are special. They continually prove wrong all the anti-life advocates who claim they never should have been born. When you have opportunity, encourage your friends and family to value the invaluable and precious lives of people with Down syndrome!

Who is Georgia Right to Life?

Georgia Right to Life is a faith-based, non-profit organization whose fundamental purpose is to engage in actions that will restore respect and effective legal protection for all innocent human beings from the moment of fertilization until natural death.

The aim of Georgia Right to Life (GRTL) is to communicate that a human person is sacred by virtue of the fact that we are created in the image of a personal benevolent God. This means that all human life must be respected and protected regardless of race, sex, age or condition of dependency. We seek to educate our grassroots pro-life community, to inform government officials of pro-life policy and to provide resources to other non-governmental organizations regarding "What is a person?".
