The Siena Scribe

March 21, 2017
In this issue of the Scribe:
Dear Parents,

On my way to the fish fry last Friday, I ran into a parent of two alumnae.  Almost immediately, she shared with me the exciting news that her daughter has been accepted to attend UGA next year, along "with many St. Catherine's graduates", she commented, and then added, "it's because of the education they received at St. Catherine's."  Upon hearing her comment, my first thought was (I hope I will not scandalize anyone): she is just being nice - I would sooner give credit to a high school then an elementary school for impacting a student's college acceptance.  So, I responded, "I am sure these students are getting a wonderful education at their high school." To my surprise, this parent repeated insistently with a smile, "It's the education they received at St. Catherine's."

A few minutes later, Ms. Hennes, Director of our Parish School of Religion, approached me to tell me that she had spoken recently with a young man who will graduate from Georgia Tech this spring.  "He wants to sign up to serve as a catechist next year," she said.  And then she shared, "He is from your first graduating class - how wonderful!"

Later that night, as I took a bit of time to pray and reflect on the blessings and challenges of the week, I gave thanks to God for these two encounters which I experienced back-to-back on a Friday evening after a busy and tiring week: beautiful examples that assured me - as we all need assurances from time to time - that what we do here at St. Catherine's makes a difference - a big difference - and matters, matters tremendously, for a long, long time.

And so today, as I share these anecdotes and reflections with you, I take a moment to pray for this young woman on her way to UGA and the young man finishing up at Georgia Tech, both of whom I had known only during their middle school years - a time of growing independence, a time, often, of the search for one's identity, and almost always a time that feels like an emotional, social, and academic rollercoaster of ups and downs.  It seems like such a very short while ago when these students - and other alumni - were middle schoolers navigating their way through the truly unique pre-teen/early-teens years.  How time flies!

Yes, how time flies - we have just entered the final quarter of this school year.  Nine weeks can feel like a very long time...or a very short time.  Let us remember that every step of the journey matters, matters tremendously and for a long, long time.  Let us, together, continue to encourage our young people to be their best and give their best to God, every day.

God bless,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.
Principal

This year's annual Music Honors Festival for the Archdiocese of Atlanta was held at Blessed Trinity High school on March 18.     Students in the St. Catherine's Blazer Intermediate and Advanced Bands and Choir worked hard for months to prepare pieces which were performed at this festival.   Students received invaluable lessons from professional musicians and conductors and enjoyed playing and singing with peer musicians from throughout the archdiocese.  A wonderful experience was enjoyed by all!  A big "thank you" goes to our Band Director, Mrs. Marianne Gregory, and our Music Teacher, Mrs. Teri Khan for their hard work, dedication, and leadership!
