Diversity Pipeline Programs Boost Confidence, Open Doors
Dr. Jessica Peña always had an interest in science, but a career in medicine seemed daunting to her. After all, she hadn't seen doctors who looked like her. That all changed when she enrolled in Weill Cornell Medicine's Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) which exposes high school sophomores and juniors to science-related activities.

New AAMC Research Reaffirms Physician Shortage
The United States continues to face a projected physician shortage over the next decade, creating a real risk to patient care, according to new data released by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The latest projections continue to align with previous estimates, showing a projected shortage of between 40,800 and 104,900 doctors.

Weill Cornell Medicine Receives Grant to Create Primary Care Rural Residency Program in Ithaca
A New York State rural training track grant will provide funding to launch a three-year primary care rural residency program that's designed to support health equity efforts in sparsely populated areas, where there is a shortage of primary care doctors.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Transitioning Home - Montefiore Clinic Combats Health Disparities Affecting Former Inmates
Chronic health conditions such as substance-use disorders, mental illness and infectious diseases occur at higher rates among men and women in prison, and these health conditions may go untreated during incarceration, noted Dr. Aaron Fox, associate professor of internal medicine and of family and social medicine at Einstein and director of Montefiore's Bronx Transitions Clinic (BTC).

Columbia University Medical Center: Dr. Charles Drew, Blood Bank Pioneer
Dr. Charles R. Drew received a doctor of medical science degree from P&S in 1940. He was the first African-American to earn this degree in the United States. His dissertation was based on research on the properties and preservation of blood plasma in a blood bank that he and Dr. John Scudder established at Presbyterian Hospital.
