Economic outlook
Alberta's economy is turning the corner with modest economic recovery expected for the first time since oil prices began their unprecedented decline more than 2 years ago.
Growth in 2017 will be driven by exports, which will be fueled by increased drilling activity, oil production and manufacturing. Reconstruction in Fort McMurray and government capital spending will also support growth.
The recovery is expected to be moderate, as unprecedented declines in income during the downturn will continue to weigh on business investment and consumer spending. Real GDP is forecast to increase by 2.6% over the year, but will remain below pre-recession levels until 2019.

Budget 2017 maintains a focus on protecting the vital public services that matter to Albertan's, like health care, education, income support programs and social services.
Managing operating expenses in a responsible way continues to be central to government's plan to reduce the deficit year-over-year and return to balance.
The rate of growth for operating expenses will be:
- 2.2% in 2017-18
- 2.7% in 2018-19
- 2.7% in 2019-20
This is well below the projected rate of population growth plus inflation projected for Alberta, which is expected to average 3.3% in each of the next 3 years.

Alberta's manufacturing sector continued to show signs of recovery
in January as sales grew for a third consecutive month.

Statistics Canada said Friday that manufacturing sales in the province rose 2.7 per cent from December, to $5.7 billion - the highest monthly total since July 2015, according to ATB Financial. Year-over-year sales were 14.8 per cent higher.
"Throughout the course of 2016, Alberta's manufacturing sector struggled to find traction, but this trend appears to be reversing," ATB said in a report Friday.
Gains were posted in 14 of 21 industries tracked by StatsCan, led by an 8.6 per cent jump in shipments of petroleum and coal products.

Alberta oilsands production outlook bright despite gloomy headlines

The sell-off of Alberta oils sands assets by another big international player - along with big reserve writedowns, the introduction of a carbon tax and a stumbling crude price - all suggest a gloomy outlook for production from the world's third-largest proven oil reserves.
But Canada's oilsands output is still expected to set new records in 2017 and climb even further in the coming years.
Part of this year's boost would come from
the Fort Hills project, expected to achieve first oil late this year and rise to 194,000 barrels per day through 2018. It is the last giant Canadian oilsands mine in advanced development by a major energy company.
Additional production is coming from smaller thermal projects that use steam.....

A new industry focused
on renewable energy
|
|
|
will be setting up shop in Parkland County. Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. will begin construction this spring on a new $75 million wood pellet plant in Entwistle. Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. is the longest-established wood pellet producer in Western Canada. The new facility will produce wood pellets which are used around the world to produce a low carbon renewable energy resource. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2018, creating approximately 60 full time positions.
