February and March have been busy for CALC! In February, we celebrated Black History Month, and March brought many opportunities to be involved in community action, along with the first signs of spring!
"Not in Our City" Rally & Building Circles

Sunday February 12, CALC hosted the Not in Our City Rally at the Washington/Jefferson City Park. The rally was a peaceful response against the recent hate activity in our community.  Speakers at the rally included youth from  City Wide MEChA , people from our local Jewish and Muslim communities, and city officials.

After the rally, there was an opportunity to join with fellow community members in "Building Circles" to organize and strengthen community. The Building Circles helped to cultivate awareness and resistance through education, theatre, art, poetry, building communi ty response teams, and more.

A Victory for Shelter Rights

Monday February 27, the Eugene City Council unanimously voted to make permanent two programs that provide those without homes legal and safe places to sleep . City councilors agreed to remove the sunset dates for the Rest Stop and Dusk to Dawn overnight sleeping programs.

The Dusk to Dawn program, run by St. Vincent de Paul, provides a place for homeless people to sleep between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.

Rest Stops provide ongoing legal shelter for up to 20 people in tents on platforms, Conestoga huts, or tiny houses.  Five rest stops are currently in operation.

In collaboration with the unhoused and other homeless activists, CALC's Shelter Rights organizer Michael Carrigan has played an important role in creating the Rest Stops, and will continue to advocate for the expansion of homeless services.  "Five rest stops are not enough. The Rest Stop Ordinance needs to be changed so that there will be more possible locations to cite Rest Stops - we want them placed in every City Ward," says Michael.

This ordinance does not name Eugene as an official Sanctuary City, which could have impacted federal funding. However the spirit of the ordinance stays true to what it means to be a Sanctuary City.  See KEZI's coverage of the City Council's vote and  learn more about the Sanctuary Movement .
