The Sweep-In is a gathering of broom makers in Berea, KY from 12 different states! We will be offering a selection of classes that are open to the public from 9 am to 1 pm.
These classes will be open to the public to come and try their hand at the art of broom making!

2nd Annual Dandelion Festival at Berea College

This year's Dandelion Festival will be on April 8, 2017. Workshops will be held in Baird Lounge in Alumni Building from 9am-12pm.
The Festival will be held on Fairchild Lawn on Berea College's campus from 1-6pm and will feature musical entertainment, booths from local businesses, food, games, and activities (all child-friendly)!
Berea College Dining Services will serve dinner on the lawn from 4:30-6pm.

Join us for our Introduction to 4-Harness Weaving retreat in historic Berea, Kentucky:
Class runs from Thursday morning to Friday - we strongly suggest arrival on Wednesday evening; this makes a great mini-vacation - lots to do in and around the area, and the April class is during the world-famous Keeneland Spring Meet!
Learn to weave on a beautiful Schacht Wolf Pup loom with our very own veteran instructor, Nancy Reid. Nancy brings over 20 years of fine weaving instructing & experience to the table, and will be instructing this Make & Take class. On Day 1, you should expect to weave and complete a sampler, and on Day 2, a set of mug rugs or scarf.
On Friday morning, enjoy a private tour of the famous Berea Weaving Center before class for some inspiration!
$475 includes: cost of class, materials, breakfast both days, daily beverages/afternoon snacks, a copy of the class text Learning to Weave by Deborah Chandler, and use of Schacht Wolf Pup loom (room and meals not included).

Red Bud Recovery Ride
April 23rd

The 10th Annual Redbud Ride is coming to Berea! The event, organized be the London Downtown and presented by Saint Joseph London, KY, has been voted active.com's "Best Century Ride in America."
The event starts in London on Thursday April 20th with the Leather and Spandex Ride, followed by the Redbud Warm-up on Saturday in Barbourville and then the Redbud Ride on Saturday in London.
The event comes to Berea Sunday at 10am for the Redbud Recovery ride. Find more information at

Yarn Bombing Day at Fiber Frenzy

Let's yarn bomb the tree in our side yard again. Last year's pieces are looking pretty frayed, and April just invites a new set of clothes for the tree.
Let's change it up a little bit this year and do garter strip pieces in worsted weight, bright colors, and flowers in all colors, shapes, and sizes. We will bring refreshments and party with friends all afternoon!

Join us to decorate a cake with Doodlebug Cakes, blow a glass mint julep cup, a garden globe or more with Weston Glass Studio, create fashionable bracelets with Gastineau Studio, craft springtime mead with Jereme Zimmerman, recreate a beautiful Kentucky sunset in acrylics with Gina Dittmeier, upcycle a bourbon barrel for a cobweb broom with Justin Burton, build a wind art whirly-bird with woodworker, Tim Wade or grow your blacksmithing skills with Jeff Farmer as you forge a vine letter opener and a leaf key-ring or a camp knife.

College Art Collection: Southeast Asia- Now- May 27th- As part of our showing of objects from the College Art Collection, we at the Doris Ulmann Galleries like to display art to go along with the Francis and Louise Hutchins Center for International Education's International Focus. This year's International Focus is Southeast Asia. Join us in the Masterpiece Gallery to appreciate the fine works of art that come from Southeast Asia.
Brush, Ink, Line: Calligraphy of Japan- Now- May 4th- This exhibit of Japanese calligraphy is a corollary to work by Nishiki Sugawara-Beda, on display in Upper Traylor Gallery.
Graduation Exhibit for Art Majors- April 17th-May 4th- This exhibit showcases the work of Berea College's graduating Art Majors.

Kentucky Artisan Center Exhibits and Demonstrations
"225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History"
New Exhibit! (Through September 23rd)
The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will honor the 225th Anniversary of Kentucky becoming a state, with the exhibit 225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History.
Kentucky has always cherished its history. The preservation of Kentucky stories, places and traditions has shaped its culture today. This exhibit includes over 60 works by 51 Kentucky artists who have recorded and celebrated numerous facets of Kentucky's rich 225-year history.
These works capture the essence of Kentucky - including its historical places, people, events, state commerce, agriculture and the state's unique flora and fauna. Accompanied by written stories and histories in each artist's words, this exhibit entices the viewer visually and verbally.
Covering Kentucky history from 1775 to the present, this exhibit includes portraits of famous Kentuckians from Daniel Boone to Mohammed Ali.
Viewing this exhibit brings Kentucky history to life with sculptures, images and words from 51 Kentucky artists.
"Reveal: Don Ament and Joyce Garner"
Now- April 30th
The Center's new exhibit program, Reveal had so many strong entries that jurors selected two artists in a selection-tie for this new showcase of large format two-dimensional works in the Center's lobby. Both artists selected are new to the Kentucky Artisan Center. Large photographic panels of water and landscapes by Lexington artist Don Ament were chosen as well as large format oil paintings by Louisville artist Joyce Garner.
Reveal is an exciting new program at the Center that provides exhibition opportunities for Kentucky artists whose larger two-dimensional works cannot be accommodated within the center's regular retail spaces.
Saturday Tours and Demonstrations
April 1st
-Donnie and Donna Smith, of Waco, will carve and paint natural gourds from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
Most of the Smith's gourds are raised on their 5-acre farm. Donna, who has a background in graphic design, draws on the gourd first with pencil, and then with a wood-burning tool. The gourds are then painted with watercolors, inks, dyes, water-based stains and sealed with a clear acrylic.
-Author Jim Shields will sign copies of his children's book "Welcome Baby Bunnies" from 11am to 2pm at the Center.
April 8th
-
Lisa Hagen, of Louisville, will demonstrate how she makes her round beeswax luminaries using dried flowers and wax from
10:30am to 3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Hagen has been making natural soaps and botanicals for many years and recently developed her luminaries. Each one hold a votive candle and the globe lights up and glows sending the fragrance of honey and beeswax into the air.

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided tours through the Center's gallery exhibit, "225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History" and the lobby exhibits, "Reveal: Don Ament and Joyce Garner."
These free, guided exhibit tours will be led by Kentucky Artisan Center staff who will talk about the exhibits, the artists and individual works. Staff will answer questions about the techniques and various processes used, and the objects featured. Tours will be given at 11am and again at 2pm.
April 15th
-Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques on Saturday from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers live in many communities in central Kentucky, and their activities include carving classes, carving demonstrations at schools, monthly Kentucky Artisan Center demonstrations and special events.
April 22nd (Earth Day)
-Darlene Hellard, of McKee, will create an amazing array of flowers from corn shucks from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
Hellard dyes the corn husks into many colors and folds and gathers them into a variety of flowers. Over the years, she has come up with many new flower designs.
April 29th

asket artist Jan Treesh, of Lexington will demonstrate her basket weaving techniques from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
Treesh uses traditional weaving techniques and her basket forms include both traditional round bottom baskets that are formed by arranging reeds in a "spoke" fashion, and then twining the walls with round reed.

3rd Friday contra dances at Chez Moi, our "fine home and dancehall" above the Old Town Candy Kitchen. Come to the left side of the building and ascend. The dance runs from 8pm-11pm before devolving into fun and merriment of all sorts till the wee hours. Calling is by a cavalcade of volunteers, and music is by ... YOU! Bring your instruments and calling cards - you get in FREE! The rest are in for the low low price of $3.
No partner or experience is needed. All dances are taught first and then prompted. We change partners after every dance, and are especially welcoming to new dancers! If you get winded, there are seven miles of sofas and a table-full of food and drinks to revive you. Root around for the Ramekin of Recompense and drop in a few dinero if you can.

Fun dancing for the whole family! The beginners' session from 7:30pm - 8pm will teach you everything you need to know, then dance the night away to foot-stomping live music and a rotating cast of experienced callers. Cost is $5 for students and seniors (65+), $8 for the rest of us. And bring a snack for the break if you're so inclined - your fellow dancers will appreciate it!
No partner or experience is needed. All dances are taught first and then prompted. We change partners after every dance and are especially welcoming to new dancers! Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat smooth-soled shoes that won't mar the fine wood floor, then get ready for a good workout!

A native of Menifee County and an archaeologist for over 20 years, Wayna Adams is currently the forest archaeologist for the Daniel Boone National Forest; her job is to protect and learn from archaeological sites located there. opening a new restaurant here in #BereaKy! The doors are set to open in mid-April, so be sure to check their website and social media to stay up-to-date!
-Clemintine's Bake Shop is opening a brick and mortar this month! We are excited to add another member to our community.
-Berea is welcoming a new craft fair this spring! The Berea Makers Market will spotlight modern craft and indie design that is found right here in Berea. The date is set for May 13th at the Russel Acton Folk Center, so mark your calendars!
