Get to Know Your Committee Members:
|
We began introducing our new USHJA Zone 9 Committee Members in January. They are already working hard for the zone. Take a minute to get to know some of them:
Megan Jordan, Treasurer
Megan, of Oregon City, Oregon, has been involved in the sport her entire life with parents who were grand prix riders and sport horse breeders. Growing up she rode hunters and jumpers but also rode in breed specific competitions for Paints, Arabians and Quarter Horses. She started her training program, Venture Farm, in 1999 where she brings along horses and riders of every level. As a committee member she would like to see the horse show community grow in Oregon and Washington. When she's not riding and training she enjoys traveling with her family and supporting her two young boys who are also competitive athletes. If she could have dinner with any equestrian she would choose Jimmy Williams because he is such a masterful horseman.
Gayl Russell, Member
Gayl, of Wise River, Montana, is an adult amateur competitor who primarily rides jumpers. She raises and trains her own horses to show over fences as well as in speed classes including barrel racing, pole bending and stakes races. Growing up her father was a range rider and took care of cattle on pasture in the mountains. She learned a lot from riding at camps on the mountain and was even a farrier. She also serves as a board member of Montana Hunter Jumper Association. As a committee member, she hopes to help bridge the gap between the grassroots associations and their competitors and bigger, rated shows. Outside the sport she enjoys scuba diving, downhill skiing and riding her Harley Davidson. If she could have dinner with any equestrian she would easily pick Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum because she admires her riding ability and horsemanship.
Corene Smith, Member
Corene, of Woodinville, Washington, is a trainer and partner at Archway Equestrian LLC. She has been riding since she was 7 years old and has been a professional for 19 years. She currently competes on the hunter/jumper circuit. In addition to the zone committee, she is also a member of the WCHR Task Force. As a Zone 9 Committee Member, she wants to be available to zone members who have questions and encourage others to be involved and help the area grow and evolve. Outside the sport, Corene spends her time with her husband and three children. If she could have dinner with any equestrian she would choose Beezie Madden or McLain Ward.

Grant Money Will be Available for Members!

grant money available for members who are interested in participating in the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program or Trainer Certification Program. Click the links below to apply for these grants!

The USHJA Zones 9 & 10 Jumper Team Championships will be November 10-12 at National Sunshine Series II in Thermal, California.
Mark your calendars, review the
specifications, and make sure to get your rider
applications in by
May 1!
Earn a minimum of 20 points ($20 money-won) by June 1 to be eligible to qualify for the championships.
Each rider's Championship costs will be offset by a minimum of $75 paid by the rider's USHJA Zone.

Don't Miss This Team Championship Experience

The USHJA Children's and Adult Amateur Hunter Regional Championships, presented by SmartPak, for the West Region (Zones 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12) will be July 18-23 at Oregon High Desert Classic I in Bend, Oregon.
To attend the Championships this year:
- Apply online at www.ushja.org/chaahunter by May 1
- Continue competing to earn points toward qualifying until 60 days prior to your competition
- Check out the specifications and ensure you meet all other criteria (Please note: Riders may not compete in a class that exceeds 3'3" during the qualifying period (Exception: riders may compete in the USHJA National Hunter Derby and the Children's or Adult Amateur Jumper sections during the qualifying period)
Each rider's Championship costs will be offset by a minimum of $100 paid by the rider's USHJA Zone.

Zone 9 members are encouraged to apply in 2017, and
travel grants will be available to members to assist with travel costs.
