International day was a success!
La journée international : un succès !

Last Thursday, March 22nd, SDFAS had two majors events to celebrate the diversity of our community: a special Forum about India, and in the afternoon, the presentation of 30 legendary characters, each originated from a different country. Sufi Raina performed a Kathak dance on the music played on tablas by Milles  Shrewsbery.

In Preschool and Kindergarten we had 28 students from different countries who participated.

Thank you to all their parents!
In 8th grade:  "The International week was the occasion for some of our students to share the languages they speak at home with their classmates:
  • Vincent Gelibert and Charles Shaffer taught us some Farsi and helped us write our names in the persian alphabet.
  • Nha-Ai Ha introduced us to Vietnamese and showed us how to pronounce the different tons and sounds of this complexe language.
  • We then learned how to read Pouchkine in Russian and write our names in the Cyrillic alphabet with Michael Abagyan.
  • Ella Greiner taught us how to say "I love chocolate cake" in German and told us about her life in Berlin.
  • Finally, we explored the history of Canadian French with Yann Baglin Bunod who explained to us where this different vocabulary came from.
  • Tanguy Cornet taught us about the Creole language of Guadeloupe and its history while listening to a song from the Antilles.
Thank you all for those interesting moments and we hope we'll get all to speak those languages fluently one day! "

La Chorale Kinder-1st grade - With Teacher Claire Selva - Wednesday March 22, 2017
La Chorale Kinder-1st grade
With Teacher Claire Selva
Wednesday March 22, 2017

Our last Mini forum was a true example of the ability of our students to speak different languages: the first performance was in French, the second one was in English and the third one in Mandarin!

ÉDITO

Spring is a wealthy time of events and celebrations: SDFAS Gala at Hotel Del Coronado was a grand venue, and we would like to thank all the SDFAS community for making it a successful and unforgettable event. Thanks to your generosity to the fund-a-need initiative, students will benefit in the next Fall from topnotch sports equipment and field unique to a private independent PK-8th grade school in the area.

Our community, through the Groupe Humanitaire Program is also supporting the community. Today, at the Forum, we invited several charities to donate the money collected at the Jog-a-thon. For example students in a rural region of Haïti will be able to return to school, thank to our donation to Haïti Futur.

Also this week, SDFAS celebrates Spirit Week in the middle school. The Spirit Week agenda encourages students to wear a fun and funky array of clothes. On Friday, all students are also invited to join in the frenzy of Crazy Hair Day, so watch out!

Finally, Spring is all about poetry: elementary students practice "wild poetry", brightening the day on campus of teachers and staff with "impromptu" enactments of short poems in French.

Enjoy reading the Echo to find out about more events coming up soon!

Christian Jarlov, Head of school

Chers parents,

Visit and Donation to Rady's Children Hospital
Visite et donation à Rady's Children Hospital

Picture: students delegates give a check of $1,200, money raised at the Jog-a-thon, to support Rady's Children Hospital 3D heart program.

On Wednesday March 15, 6th and 7th graders visited the 3D Heart project at Rady's Children Hospital. They were welcomed by the team of surgeons, led by Dr Hegde, and received very detailed explanation on how children with serious heart condition can be cured, using state of the art technology. They were shown samples of hearts printed on 3D printers. These hearts help doctors be better prepared to perform very complex surgery. The school has supported last year this projects funded through donations.
Quote from Laura Lavoie, Director of Philantrophy at Rady's Children Hospital:
"Thank you so much for sharing your students with us this afternoon - it was a treat to spend time with them, to witness their curiosity and care for Rady Children's and our 3D Heart program, and to share first-hand the incredible work your community has helped us to undertake.

Thank you again for your continued support of this program, which has made a real impact on the lives of real children".
Printemps des Poètes Celebration

This is a yearly initiative from the French Ministry of Education, which gives students an opportunity to explore poetry.
In April, with the leadership of Ms. Addo and Mrs. Bunod, their French teachers, Middle School students will compose poems, which they will trade. They will also explore the "Calligramme" poem form, which will be displayed in the Parent Area. Finally, 6th graders will practice poetry even more than their 7th and 8th grade's peers as they will create poetry books in Extended Studies with Ms. Pailhes. Their works will be displayed later on in the library.
Art Fair is coming soon in May!

The 2017 SDFAS ART FAIR is approaching! Prepare to submit paintings, drawings, photography, crafts, sculpture, mixed media and more! Art must be submitted on Monday May 15th only. Cubetto is wooden robot that will move when you give it some commands: move forward, backward, pivot to the left, to the right. All you need are colored blocks that you insert in a queue line on a board.
Later on when the PK1 students will be expert with the different moves of Cubetto, they will be able to use the function line, and use a blue block to recall a sequence.
It is true coding and the children love it!

An Archeologist visited the MS Antique World Languages Club
Visite d'un archéologue au Club de Langues de l'antiquité

On March 16, students from the MS Antique World Languages Club benefited from the visit from a REAL archeologist in the classroom! Far from the Indiana Jones explorer/archeologist myth, they learnt how archeology is in fact everywhere around us, here in San Diego, in the USA and beyond. They understood how archeology, as a branch of anthropology, helps better understand past civilisations and human activity. They had the opportunity to touch some artifacts and make some interpretations about them.

Thank you to Ms. Addo, their SDFAS teacher, and Mr. Shelmire, who kindly accepted to come on campus!
From the 7th grade classroom - Sustainability: let's be responsible for our school environment!

As part of the Histoire/Géographie French curriculum, the 7th graders have been working on sustainability for several weeks. In 7th grade A, they have identified areas of the school environment for which they strongly thought they could come up with concrete solutions.
In order to take the projects out of the classroom and translate students' ideas into concrete action, Mrs. Brouder asked Mr. Duran, our Facility Manager, and Mrs. Proto, our DFO, to join in the classroom and listen to the students' suggestions on March 16, 2017. Students briefly explained how they worked and presented the concrete solutions that they believed the school could implement.

Thanks a lot to Mr. Duran and Mrs. Proto for their support and for facilitating the implementation of the pilot programs we came up with!
6th grade Science field trip to Suzy's Farm
Sortie des élèves de 6ème à la Ferme de Suzy

Pictured: Sophie

On Friday March 24, the 6th graders enjoyed a Science field trip to Suzy's Farm. The goals were to understand how an organic farm is run without any pesticides and artificial chemicals. Students dived their hands into the soil, and tasted fresh products. They loved the natural taste of organic vegetables such as kale, carrots or turnips. Now, it is time to write down their observations in class !
From the Science classroom to an award: congratulations for the wonderful accomplishment!

Pictured: Killian

The Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair allows 7th to 12th grade students to explore topics in 16 different science and engineering categories.  Students design and conduct an experiment-based project that they then must present to judges and the general public. This year Killian Lozach, an 8th grader, represented SDFAS at the GSDSEF between March 15th and 19th. Killian is very interested in saltwater aquarium, marine environments and the organisms that inhabit them. He developed a project that examined the effects of calcium and alkalinity on corals that he had in different tanks. Killian entered his project into the environmental sciences and management junior division (middle school) category.  After competing at the school fair and a qualifying fair just to be qualified to enter the GSDSEF, Killian's project went on to take third place overall in his category.

This is a wonderful accomplishment for Killian and we are very proud of his interest and efforts. Congratulations and we'll be looking for more great projects in the future
