Course Selection

This week and last week Energy deans have been visiting each cohort to complete course selection for the 2017-2018 school year. Students are given an updated transcript and review graduation requirements with their dean in order to ensure they are on track. Please look for a copy of your student's course selections to be sent home later this semester. At that time if you'd like to discuss changes with your student's dean you will have an opportunity to discuss prior to schedules being created.

College 101 Night This Thursday

This Thursday is a very important night on your child's path to the perfect college!  Please mark your calendar to join us on Thursday, March 30th at 5:45 PM.  We encourage 9-11th grade parents and students to attend to learn more about the college timeline, financial aid and scholarships, essay writing, applications, and resume building. We are bringing in a variety of experts to present on these topics.  We ask you to arrive at 5:45 PM so that you can pick up your schedule for the evening and we can start promptly at 6:00 PM.  Sign up for the sessions you'd like to attend here: http://tinyurl.com/2017College101

ACT Registration and Payment

It is very important for all students to have a SAT and ACT test score in order to increase their changes of attending their desired school. We have been approved as a school day testing site, which is huge!  All juniors will be taking the ACT test on Wednesday, April 19th. The school will be covering a large portion of the expense, but we do need all juniors to pay $30 towards the test.  If you have not paid for the ACT test yet, please pay as soon as possible! You can pay with cash at the main desk, or pay online at   http://www.tinyurl.com/payforact2017.

STUDENT PODCASTS
Take a look at what the Nuclear Brainstormers just created! The groups in this sophomore cohort created podcasts synthesizing all of their knowledge on multiple segments of the project. Each episode covers an assigned trade route and its impact, their assigned Houston neighborhood, information on the bridge they designed and built, and how their bridge connects the neighborhood to another cultural hub or resource. Support our sophomores by taking some time to listen to these student podcasts.

Science Fair Special Awards
They competed at the regional science fair February 25th.

Congratulations Energy Students!

Last week, the junior cohort Quantum Squad had the privilege of having the representatives from Air Alliance Houston join our class for an Entry Event for this cohort's final PBL of the year. This was an exciting information session where the Air Alliance representatives discussed the air quality within the City of Houston in terms of sources of ozone pollution. Students also learned how to research past "high-ozone level" days and what to do if Houston has high-ozone level days.

In addition, the  no nprofit organization invited our students to join them last Tuesday to learn more about the new Houston Bike Plan approved by the City Council. Energy Institute HS's own Simei Avila Garcia took time after school to join Air Alliance Houston as they waited for the affirmative decision to better the City of Houston. The cohort would like to extend their thanks to the hard workers at this organization - especially Ms. Leticia Ablaza - who dedicate their time and energy to promote a safer living area  for our community.

The team will be competing at College Park HS in the Woodlands on  March 31 - April 2.

PARENT SPOTLIGHT

We are proud to introduce Energy's first ever Parent Spotlight. This week, we would like to shed a beaming light to Mr. Piddington and Mrs. Lowe! This parent-powerhouse first got involved with the Energy community when looking at high schools for their son to attend. With their son's acceptance, Mr. Piddington and Ms. Lowe started to invest more time in finding ways they could support the Energy campus. They have hosted an industry night in order to spread industry awareness and opportunities at this school. Industry Night also brought guest speakers to the Energy Community! "We wanted to increase the engagement with the business community, get more speakers, more sponsors for the different trips, projects, mentoring that goes on, as well as to boost the profile of the school," explains Ms. Lowe.
Nowadays, their time at EIHS is spent assisting with weekly tours and weekend School Fairs to give the parent perspective to prospective families. "It was wonderful to talk to potential families about all the opportunities EIHS provides for students looking for out of the box solutions to their educational needs.  Project Based Learning is exciting to talk about to others who have never heard about it!" says Ms. Lowe. In addition, Ms. Lowe is working with Energy administration to improve school wide processes, especially pertaining to onboarding our new students and families. Thank you for all you do!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
This week's spotlight is Ali Ramazani! Ali is an exceptional student, unwavering in his work ethic and dedication to bettering himself.  He is helpful to his classmates, respectful and kind to his teachers, and an all around pleasure to have in class," Ms. Kristick says.

Ali enjoys to play rocket league on PS4, plays indoor soccer, and would love to join the robotics team next year. He joined the JV Inventors program and is very proud of it because he had the opportunity to make friends with upperclassmen and of course, learn the processes of engineering used for inventing. "One thing I learned in this program was group work and how to build your own ideas. It was a fun experience working with teammates to build a phone stand and getting feedback from other students in the program," says Ali.  His most important goal is to attend an Ivy League college. His interests lie under studies in computer science because he did research of many future job possibilities with that chosen study. "I think technology is always improving and never stops. There would be many jobs available that deal with this newer technology."

When asked about his favorite part of Energy, he stated that, "There are many positive things in Energy Institute High School and my favorite part is the PBL because I think one of the most efficient ways to learn is by doing it, which will help you to not only learn but also gain valuable experience that will help you throughout your life.  Energy Institute helped me learn the required social skills such as communicating with your teammates and helping each other to deliver a successful project."

Ali's Advice:
"Take advantage of all the opportunities in school, such as clubs and programs. Write your goals and plan on how to achieve them. America is the land of opportunities and there is no limit that would stop you from achieving your goals." - Ali Ramazani
By Reagan Dennis

Yvette Alvarran would like to give a shout out to Reagan Dennis. " She is in charge of this high fives section, shout out to you, and I think she's very crazy-amazing!"

Shoutout to Mr. Lamb  "because he's the best teacher at this school who makes the lessons involved and makes it easy to learn."

High-Five to all of the English teachers getting students prepared for the STAAR.

A huge shoutout to all of the teacher who are supporting NHS by contributing to their fundraiser.

Energy would like to send a big "good luck" shoutout to our robotics team this week! We are rooting for you guys!

Summer STEM Program

Science Technology Engineering Mathematics

Engineering is all about creating, building, and making things better! So what does it take to be an engineer? If you like math and science, you are off to a great start. If you enjoy discovering new things, solving problems, and learning how things work - even better! Creativity, persistence, and the desire to make the world a better place are also important qualities. Becoming an engineer requires hard work and a good education. Our summer program will be a great start to your career in science and engineering.

It is not too late to enroll in the Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) summer offerings for students although there are limited openings in many of them.

* RUSMP is offering two new and exciting three-week enrichment mathematics programs at Episcopal High School:

(1) For students entering 8th-grade in the fall of 2017:
Through the lens of computational thinking, students will explore mathematics using technology to develop inductive and visual reasoning. Hands-on activities integrating mathematics and computer science will provide an innovative approach to learning mathematics.

(2) For students who have completed pre-calculus:
At the end of this program, students will be better equipped for the rigor of college-level mathematics and for success on A.P. Calculus and I.B. Mathematics exams. Proof, justification, and authentic problems will be explored using a variety of methods including graphing technology and other computing tools.
