Lights, Camera, Action!

Project Literacy, a global charity founded by Pearson, came to Center for Literacy (CFL)'s office for two days to film a commercial for their new campaign aimed at breaking the cycle of illiteracy. Two CFL students were featured, James Dyroff and Nereida (Nellie) Melendez. (Take a look at their videos below.)  Read more.

Neredia Melendez:
Fan of Free Library

Neredia (Nellie) had her first child when she was 14 years old and dropped out of school when she was in 8th grade. Five months after she enrolled at CFL, Nellie went from 8th grade reading to 12th grade.

Nellie is now a big fan of the Free Library. "Sometimes I don't have the money and the financial means to go places that I'd like to visit. But when I come to the library I can take out a book, read, and just escape into it."

James Dyroff:  Poet

James, 25, had a drug addiction for six years and was sleeping in a porta potty.  He has been clean and sober for more than year.

"When I came to CFL, I learned a lot about myself and what I could accomplish and it also taught me not to underestimate myself," he said. After eight months at CFL, James now has a high school diploma, plus a new job at a grocery store.

Center for Literacy (CFL) was recently honored twice, at a POWER (The Power of Professional WoMen*) event and at a Philadelphia 76ers game.

On March 6, during the half-time ceremony, the 76ers presented CFL with the Game Changer Award**, sponsored by Firstrust Bank, for its "commitment to shaping our next generation of leaders and innovators."  Accepting the award on behalf of CFL were: Peggy Leimkuhler, COO of Firstrust Bank and Chair of CFL's Board of Trustees and Cynthia Allen, CFL's Director of Academic Success, CFL.

Also, at a POWER luncheon on February 23, CFL was the spotlighted non-profit.  Peggy Leimkuhler and Eileen Connolly Robbins, CEO, POWER, presented a $1,000 donation from Firstrust Bank to CFL's President and CEO Michael Westover in recognition of CFL's commitment to unleash the power of literacy to improve lives.
