Tennyson Parkway Bridge Demolition Scheduled This Weekend
Dallas North Tollway main lanes, multiple ramps will be closed

At NTTA, we get it. Sitting in traffic is no laughing matter. We know it really gets people's goat. That's why "Tennyson the goat," Tenny for short, was introduced to Dallas North Tollway (DNT) drivers last year when we needed to do major closures for some of the improvement projects work that is underway.

If Tenny could talk he would say, " NTTA customers heed the message: This coming weekend, the DNT in Plano, between Spring Creek Parkway and the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SRT)/State Highway 121, will be closed to traffic as crews demolish the remaining half of the old Tennyson Parkway bridge."

Drivers may remember last summer when the tollway was closed to traffic for two consecutive weekends. The first weekend, the north half of the bridge was demolished, and the next weekend beams were placed to begin reconstruction. Since then, the bridge was rebuilt, and traffic shifted onto the new, wider structure. Now it's time to complete the demolition of the other old bridge to continue the expansion of the DNT main lanes below.

At about 11 p.m. Friday, March 31, crews will begin a full shut down of the tollway between Spring Creek Parkway and the SRT/SH 121, including the direct-connector ramps from the SRT to southbound DNT and northbound DNT to SRT. Law enforcement officers will assist with the closing and will be stationed at entrance ramps to prevent drivers from entering the construction area.

Once the DNT is closed to traffic, crews will begin demolishing the bridge. Debris will be removed and the area cleaned up prior to reopening the tollway by 5 a.m. Monday, April 3. If  there's inclement weather, this work will be rescheduled April 7-10.

During this work, Tennyson Parkway will remain open to traffic (Tenny and many others will be pleased).

AFTER THE DEMO
Following the demolition, work to rebuild the southern half of the bridge will begin. This will take approximately six to eight months, weather permitting. Additional closures of the tollway in this area will be necessary as the bridge is reconstructed, particularly for setting beams and placing the concrete deck. Once the bridge is rebuilt, traffic will be shifted back into its original traffic pattern.

As always, NTTA appreciates the public's patience during the ongoing construction.

NTTA Preparing to Add Fourth Lane on Sam Rayburn Tollway
Residents may request a public hearing

We're planning to add a main lane in each direction along the full length of the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SRT) beginning in mid-2018. Before work begins, area residents will have the opportunity to request a public hearing  about the planned work.

The proposed new lanes will be built in the center median space.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2020. Learn more about improvements to the SRT at NTTA.org.

Anyone may request a public hearing regarding the social, economic and environmental effects of the proposed project. Requests must be submitted in writing and received or postmarked on or before April 25 to: North Texas Tollway Authority, P.O. Box 260729, Plano, Texas 75026, Attn: Sam Lopez.

If you have general questions or concerns regarding the proposed project, you may contact us at 972-628-3134.

NTTA Highlights Work Zone Safety Awareness Week

We are joining the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to draw attention to National Work Zone Awareness Week April 3-7.

NTTA employees and consultants will be decked out in orange April 5 to show support for work zone safety awareness.

Drivers and workers in safety zones are endangered by distractions such as texting, talking on a cellphone and intoxicated/impaired driving, which can trigger life-threatening crashes.

During the past five years, more than 4,400 people died and 200,000 were injured in work zone crashes. Surprisingly, drivers, not workers, are those most frequently killed in work zone crashes.

With your safety in mind, we mark work zones with large orange barrels, because they can be easily seen by drivers. To increase safety while setting up work zones, NTTA maintenance staff designed and built a special truck that lets workers place and retrieve those barrels without leaving the safety of the truck.

NTTA and FHWA recommend drivers in work zones:

●   Stay alert and minimize distractions
●   Keep their headlights on
●   Pay attention to the road
●   Merge well before reaching the lane closure
●   Leave space between vehicles
●   Obey the posted speed limit
◦   Workers may be just feet away
◦   Fines may be doubled for moving speeding in work zones
●   Change lanes safely
●   Expect the unexpected
◦   Workers, work vehicles or equipment may enter your lane without warning
◦   Other vehicles may slow, stop or change lanes unexpectedly

Remember these driving tips to stay safe and perhaps save a life, including your own.
