Kansas State Polytechnic recipient of KDOT airport improvement grant
 Kansas State Polytechnic is receiving a financial boost from the Kansas Department of Transportation to help improve parts of the aviation property.
The campus has been awarded a Kansas Airport Improvement Program grant from KDOT in the amount of $428,990, which will be used to renovate portions of the engine run-up area and taxi routs on the ramp just outside the aviation center. The grant was awarded March 29 by Richard Carlson, Kansas secretary of transportation, and Merrill Atwater, director of aviation for KDOT, during a ceremony in the aviation maintenance hangar.
"It is imperative that the ramp area is maintained because that will reduce damage to our state aircraft from ground debris, which ultimately results in saving our students money and the campus additional man hours," said Eric Shappee, aviation professor and director of flight operations, during the event.
Tissa Salter, an instructor in technical communication, provided her expertise in writing the grant and Kurt Barnhart, associate director of research and engagement, Joe Harrison, director of facilities, and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons, also contributed to the process. Kansas State Polytechnic was selected as one of 26 recipients around the state for airport improvements. The combined total value of the approval projects is estimated at $4.45 million, with Kansas State Polytechnic receiving the third largest amount.
"Aviation
is a cornerstone of this campus that dates back more than 50 years," said Dean Fitzsimmons, "and we have proudly continued that focus through the current professional pilot, airport management, aviation maintenance management and UAS programs. With this grant, we can keep providing a safe environment for our aviation students, CFIs, faculty and staff. It also allows us to keep working toward our 2025 goals, which includes improving facilities and infrastructure."
The grant is expected to be dispersed during the state's fiscal year of 2018.

Come fly with us: Details on how to obtain an authorization to fly in UAS pavilion
 Did you know that the Smoky Hill UAS Pavilion can be utilized by students, faculty and staff to fly personal UAS and small RC Aircraft?
Authorization to fly in the pavilion requires a checkout meeting with a K-State Polytechnic UAS flight instructor, which covers the pavilion policy and standard operating procedures. Those interested will also go through a checkout flight with the personal aircraft to determine airworthiness and flight control competency. Upon completion of the checkout process, individuals will be added to a roster sheet and will be granted access to the pavilion.
Prior to flying a personal UAS in the pavilion, individuals must schedule a time slot with Kendra Dyck, the UAS administrative assistant. Active UAS classes and research efforts will always take priority over any other recreational flying, so scheduling is necessary. When scheduling a slot to fly, names will be verified against the in-house roster, to ensure prior authorization has been granted. Available flight times include: 8-10 a.m., 10 a.m. - noon, noon - 2:00 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Weekend and after hours flights can also be requested but approval will be on a case-by-case basis.
Those students that have already taken or are currently enrolled in a multirotor course and have received a current solo endorsement or completed the course do not need to schedule a checkout meeting. These individuals can schedule a time to fly directly with Kendra.

Andrew Smith selected as aviation maintenance educator of the year
 Andrew Smith, a 13-year veteran of the aviation maintenance management program at Kansas State Polytechnic, has been selected as the 2017 Ivan. D. Livi Aviation Maintenance Educator of the Year.
The honor is presented annually by the Aviation Technician Education Council, or ATEC, to recognize the outstanding achievements of a collegiate professor or instructor in the aviation maintenance technology field. Presented since 1990, Smith will receive his award on April 1 at the organization's annual conference in Seattle.
In addition to teaching, Smith serves as the faculty advisor for Kansas State Polytechnic's Radio Controlled Flying student club - a hobby of building and flying model aircraft that he used to share with his father when he was a boy. Recently, he also has been assisting the campus's Applied Aviation Research Center on research projects involving unmanned aircraft systems.
In total, Smith has more than 35 years of aircraft maintenance experience and has been teaching collegiate aviation for 24 years. Along with a bachelor's degree from College of the Ozarks, he has a Master of Science in aviation safety from the University of Central Missouri. Smith also operates his own aviation company and has earned his FAA Inspection Authorization. He is a designated mechanic examiner, a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor, an FAA Safety Team, or FAASTeam, representative, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Airport Support Network representative for the Salina Regional Airport.

Airport management program recognized by Airport Cooperative Research Program
 The airport management program is being acknowledged by industry for its innovative curriculum that takes students beyond the classroom.
The Airport Cooperative Research Program, or ACRP, has featured Kansas State Polytechnic's airport management program and a few of its graduates in a recent article for the Transportation Research Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Tara Harl, who is an associate professor and leader of the airport management program, says the curriculum encompasses real-world experience by using cutting-edge reports as teaching aids and bringing industry professionals into labs.
The program has been integrating research reports and webinars specifically from the ACRP to help students grow both academically and professionally.
"Our instructors do not rely on traditional textbooks - they rely on ACRP research reports to serve the role of the textbook," Harl said in the publication.
The article also highlighted Elizabeth Nelson and Michael Parker, 2016 graduates of the program, with their thoughts how Kansas State Polytechnic's integration of ACRP information within the curriculum has contributed to their own personal and professional success.

Social Work students attend Legislative Day at state capitol
Students majoring in social work at Kansas State Polytechnic received a unique experience on March 8 when they made a trip to the state capitol.
Those enrolled in the social policy class attended Legislative Day in Topeka to learn more about key issues affecting their industry and to hear
briefings from some of the state's top insurance decision-makers.
The social policy class
examines polices and programs developed to cope with various social problems. Emphasis is placed on analysis of existing programs and policies and the formulation of alternative policies.
The class also covers policy changes through organizational and legislative action, and the visit to Legislative Day gave students a firsthand connection between their education and real-life lawmaking.

Kansas State Polytechnic elects new student body president, vice president
 The student body of the Polytechnic Campus has elected its new undergraduate leadership.
Nicholas Ramirez, right, freshman in professional pilot, Wichita, has been chosen as student body president of Kansas State Polytechnic. Christian Coker, sophomore in professional pilot, Tulsa, Oklahoma, will serve as student body vice president.
The two took office during the Student Governing Association, or SGA, meeting on Tuesday, March 28, and will now be working to implement their platform of advocating for students' needs and increasing student involvement on campus.
