A new doctoral dissertation by Parvin Gheitasi at Umeå University in Sweden explores the different functions of prefabricated phrases in young learners' oral language production. These phrases provided learners with an instrument to overcome their lack of knowledge, to improve their fluency, and to enjoy some language play.

Nike Improves Shoe Accessibility

Repetition May Hold Key in Aiding Children with SLI

Simple repetition learning techniques could help young children struggling with language to learn vocabulary faster, according to the latest research from scientists from the UK and Germany.
The study by Dr Jessica Horst of the University of Sussex and Professor Katharina Rohlfing of Paderborn University examined whether repeated storybook reading was beneficial to children who had been diagnosed with specific language impairment (SLI) in helping them to retain information and word recall compared to those who were developing at the typical rate for their age."

Homemade Slime Leaves Girl with Third-Degree Burns

A common ingredient in DIY slime is to blame for a Massachusetts girl's second- and third-degree burns, according to reports.
Eleven-year-old Kathleen Quinn who made DIY slime "a million times" with no problems, suddenly started crying in extreme pain in the middle of the night, mom Siobhan Quinn told WCVB Channel 5 in Boston. The girl had second and third-degree burns covering her hands, because of her contact with detergent booster borax, her doctor said.

Students (including adults) usually respond that social thinking is only used while within a social interaction, such as hanging out with friends, playing a game, etc. It takes much discussion for students to begin to realize that social thinking is active any time you share space with others, even if you are not in direct communication. How many of us move our shopping carts out of the way of a fellow shopper walking down the same isle of a grocery store? That's social thinking.
