These are critical times in the drinking water industry. After watching record storms wash away the worst drought of our lifetimes, Sacramento is penning new water regulations that could change the way we do business moving forward.
Jeffrey Kightlinger, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), will address the aftermath of California's historic drought, new water-use regulations and potential new sources of water at a Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) Water Policy & Dinner this
Thursday, March 30
.
Our dinner will be held at a new venue, The Great Wolf Lodge, in Garden Grove, CA. The indoor water park, resort hotel and collection of restaurants, sets the industry standard for green initiatives and water use efficiency.
In addition to the program, MWDOC will also be celebrating the storied career of Russ Behrens of Best Best & Krieger, who has served as legal counsel to MWDOC and a half dozen other water agencies for more than 4 decades.
The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the meeting will adjourn at 8 p.m. The Great Wolf Lodge is located at 12681 Harbor Blvd., Garden Grove. Tickets are $90 and available at the door or by registering here.

MWDOC Partners with the Wyland Foundation to Challenge OC Cities to Save Water and Win a Pocket Park!

The Wyland Foundation has partnered with the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) to host a regional challenge for cities in MWDOC's service area, which includes 28 water agencies. The winner of the Orange County competition will not only be recognized by the Wyland Foundation, but they will also be awarded their very own water-wise pocket park!
The Wyland Foundation National Mayor's Challenge tasks Mayors across the nation to encourage residents to do their part to use water more wisely. The competition has garnered participation from hundreds of cities across the country for the past 6 years.
This friendly competition invites members of the community to participate in water use efficiency efforts while vying for bragging rights with their neighboring cities. Residents who take the Pledge can get involved further by posting on social media, or creating videos showing how they conserve water.

Legislation Introduced to Thwart California WaterFix -
MWD Leads Coalition to Oppose Bills
|
 The influx of rain this season has filled the state's reservoirs but has not dampened the efforts of the opponents of the CA WaterFix - notably Assemblyman Jim Frazier (D-Oakley). Assemblyman Frazier has introduced a suite of legislation aimed at throwing as many roadblocks as possible to slow or halt construction of this critical project that has been studied for a decade. The science-based effort has been one of the most exhaustive and rigorous public process for any infrastructure project in the nation. AB 791, AB 792, and AB 793 could delay constructing the California WaterFix by several years with no added benefit to the public process or environment.

Support Builds for WaterFix/EcoRestore
|
Nearly a dozen Orange County water providers have passed resolutions supporting the California WaterFix and EcoRestore, projects that would create twin tunnels to carry water beneath the San Joaquin/Sacramento Delta while also improving the environmentally important area.
Directors from the Municipal Water District of Orange County passed a resolution of support for the critical projects - officially known as the Calfornia WaterFix and EcoRestore - in December and urged other agencies to follow suit.
The WaterFix would move the water intakes from south of the Delta to the north, allow them to capture high river flows from storms and runoff and move them beneath the Delta to the current pumping plants that deliver the water to Southern California.
The cities of Buena Park and Huntington Beach,and East Orange County, Mesa Water, Moulton Niguel, Santa Margarita, Serrano, South Coast, Trabuco and Yorba Linda water districts have endorsed the plans.

Remembering
Rich Freschi
The Family of Orange County Water Agencies and community leaders from across the County are mourning the loss of our beloved friend and colleague, Rich Freschi. Dubbed the "best dressed man in the water world" the Serrano Water District Board Vice President, who was known as one of Villa Park's leading public voices, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017. He was 80 years old.
One of the community's most active and passionate public servants, Rich Freschi was first elected to the Serrano Water District Board of Directors in 2008 and was re-elected in 2010 and 2014. He also served on the Villa Park City Council for 12 years, including two stints as Mayor.
He was involved with many different organizations throughout Orange County including the St. Joseph's Hospital Leadership Council, Orange County Sheriff's Department Advisory Council, and the Marines' Memorial Association.
One of Rich's favorite quotes was "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that's why we call it the present."
Rich, you will be missed!

MWDOC Semi-Annual Elected Officials Forum
April 26, 2017
The Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) will present the wholesale water agency's proposed 2017-18 budget at the Elected Officials Forum on April 26.
Elected officials from throughout the county are invited to attend the semi-annual meeting hosted by MWDOC.
We request that each City and Water District designate one elected official to attend the meeting as their official representative. Other elected officials or staff are, of course, welcome to attend.

Water Awareness Contest in Full Swing!
The MWDOC 2017 Water Awareness Poster Contest is currently accepting entries!
This year's theme, "Finding Water," encourages students to dig deep and show off their water knowledge through original artwork. The contest is open to all Orange County students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Four grand prize winners, from each of the four grade divisions, will receive an iPad!
As an added bonus, any teacher who submits their student artwork as a batch is entered in a drawing to win a class pizza party and a surprise visit by Ricki the Rambunctious Raindrop!
