GPRA Update - March 29, 2017 - Pence
Dear Great Pyrenees Friends,

We were contacted by a Georgia shelter about a PYR with ear infections named Pence. We knew he was in bad shape but did not realize the depth of his problems. Guy found him laying in his own urine at the shelter as he was too week to get up. Guy  immediately took him to our vet group at VCA where Dr. Bonnie reported the following. Pence had 103.2 degree fever, was dehydrated, had pneumonia, was 40 pounds underweight and was having problems breathing. He was near death and would need to be rushed to Blue Pearl - GVS for 24 hour care, intravenous and antibiotics. We also discovered he is heart worm positive and has severe chronic ear infections that have mineralized requiring removal of both ear canals. We anticipate Pence's costs will be in the $10,000 area.

After having recently spent significant dollars on Rocky, Nysha, Zoey, Liam and Susan, why would GPRA opt to spend our precious and limited dollars on one dog? Pence is only 3 years old and all his problems are fixable. The GPRA mission is to save the neediest Great Pyrenees in the southeast and Pence is the poster boy for who we are. How could we not. We did not ask for special donations for the major surgeries for Rocky, Zoey, Susan or for the substantial medical fees for Nysha and others but we do want to ask for help to offset our Pence charges. VCA has adopted the moniker "Project Pence" and they say he is the sweetest and saddest PYR but as we know, like so many others, he will be stunning.
