The most recent presentation in the Alberti Center Colloquium Series occurred on February 7 with a discussion titled
Dignity Act Coordinator Panel: Best Practices, Challenges, and Recommendations.
A recording of the panel discussion is available here. The final colloquium in the 2016-2017 series will be
presented by Dr. Myles Faith on Tuesday, April 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The presentation is
titled Weight Teasing and
Bullying in Children: Assessment, Prevalence, and Comorbidities.

Mark your calendars! The 2017 Alberti Center Conference will take place
Thursday,
September 28 from 8-3pm at Classics V Banquet Center.
We are excited to announce that our keynote speaker this year will be Susan Swearer, Ph.D.!
Dr. Susan M. Swearer is the Willa Cather Professor of Educational  Psychology, Professor of School Psychology at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL), Co-Director of the Bullying Research Network
, and Director of the Empowerment Initiative
. She is
the principal investigator on the Target Bullying Intervention Project, featured on CBS Sunday Morning, and has a long-standing track record working with schools and districts nationwide to reduce bullying behaviors. She was an invited presenter at the White House Bullying Prevention Conference, and a panel member at the Harvard University launch of the Born This Way Foundation along with Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelieus. Dr. Swearer was also a featured bullying expert on Anderson Cooper's daytime show, "Anderson." Her work has been featured in numerous print, radio, and television outlets. Her career has been devoted to the intersection of research and practice and she is the
Chair of the Research Advisory Board for Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation
. Additionally, Dr. Swearer is the co-editor of "Bullying @ School and Online," an e-publication on Education.com
designed to close the gap between research and practice. You can read more about Dr. Swearer in her biography.

Spread the Word to End the Word Day
|
Spread the Word to End the Word (STW) Day took place on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, across the country. STW is a national campaign to encourage people to stop using the word "retard" due to its hurtful and dehumanizing historical context. This year the STW committee of WNY held an all-day event to support this initiative. Between 10am-2pm, information tables were set up at several local coffee shops offering customers the opportunity to sign a pledge to stop using the r-word. Representatives from the planning committee and self-advocates were present to answer questions and provide information. More pictures of the event can be seen on the STW Facebook page!

Committee for Children Grant Update
|
The Alberti Center will extend its mission to protect and advocate for children by administering a $500,000 grant, funded by the Committee for Children, to study how teachers and other school staff members can recognize and report sexual abuse.
Nickerson and colleagues Jennifer Livingston, senior research scientist at UB's Research Institute on Addictions, Kathleen Allen, training and evaluation specialist at the Alberti Center, and Sunha Kim, assistant professor of educational psychology and quantitative method will evaluate the effectiveness of the school component in recognizing sexual abuse.
The team will work with eight schools in the Greece Central School District near Rochester, New York.
The grant begins in May and continues for the next two years.

ommunity. Tim Parks
(graduate assistant) attended Williamsville North High School's wellness fair, on March 3, to distribute bullying related materials and resources to students in attendance.

Jessica and Shauna attended the Character Carnival in Hamburg.
|
On March 4, Jessica Rosenburg and Shauna Mauch (research assistants) represented the Center at the Character Council of WNY's annual Character Carnival along with a variety of other agencies.
Toni Torchia, Alberti Center student programming specialist, attended the Lancaster High School Health and Wellness Fair on March 16, and Brie Kishel, program & operations manager distributed handouts and information to attendees of the 14th annual Safe Schools Initiative Seminar at UB's Center for the Arts on March 23.
