RAPID Manufacturing Institute

Michigan is joining AIChE in an institute dedicated to improving the efficiency of the chemical industry by finding ways to reduce the energy required and the waste generated in making chemical products. Levi Thompson will lead the effort here in Ann Arbor.

2016 Walter J. Weber, Jr. Lecture
Dr. Marc Edwards, an environmental engineer from Virginia Tech, presented the 2016 Walter J. Weber Jr. Lecture in 2016. His lecture topic was "Drinking Water Lead Crises: How Scientists and Engineers Betrayed the Public Trust." Edwards has been working with Michigan officials and the citizens of Flint, Michigan to make their drinking water safe for consumption again.

McKetta Scholarship Winner

Maggie Covello received a John J. McKetta Scholarship from AIChE in 2016. Covello, who is also pursuing an International Minor,  has served as an officer in AIChE, Omega Chi Epsilon, and Alpha Phi Omega. McKetta is an alumnus of the Department ( BSE '43, MS '44, PhD '46).

Coating method could improve temporary implants
  
A strategy for coating complicated surfaces with biodegradable polymers has been pioneered by a team of researchers led by Joerg Lahann.  It could enable coatings for implants that dissolve in the body, such as drugs to improve healing.

Nanoshells: Potential catalysts and cradles of life

Nick Kotov and his team have found a way to coax simple, inorganic nanoparticles to spontaneously assemble into shells has been discovered, potentially paving the way for more efficient industrial chemical processing, gene delivery and clean-up of chemical contaminants in the environment

A crystal ball for crystal formation
  
With many hours on a supercomputer, Sharon Glotzer and colleagues are expanding their earlier simulations to explore important questions of how molecular particles assemble to form a crystalline unit and the factors that drive how that template grows and repeats uniformly.
