Host a Seminarian for the Summer
Seminarians in formation for priesthood are required to spend a summer interning at a local hospital, learning to provide pastoral care to people in crisis. Every year, students living in Austin and attending the Seminary of the Southwest come to Houston to learn in the Texas Medical Center. Their internship is unpaid and requires them to relocate at their own cost, often separated from their homes and families for 10-11 weeks. Several of our future priests are in search of hospitality for this coming summer. If you would be willing to host a seminarian during their internship, please contact the Rev. Sarah Knoll Sweeney, CPE Supervisor and Episcopal priest at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center with your availability.
Immigration Info and Assistance in Austin Area
Proyecto Santiago, at St. James', Austin, offers pro bono assistance to immigrant parents who wish to prepare a power of attorney for a relative in case the parents are deported. The power of attorney allows a relative to have custody of minor children in such a case so that they are not turned over to a state agency. Proyecto Santiago is even doing this for immigrants with legal status because they sometimes get swept up in immigration raids as well. Proyecto Santiago will also assist families to prepare a written emergency plan for such an event, hoping, of course, it never occurs. The group is looking for attorneys who will help pro bono.  Please contact  Jim Harrington  or call him at 512.926.6339 extension 1. For more information in Spanish, click here.
