YOUNG ORANGUTAN IS READY TO JOIN A NEW FAMILY
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will soon say goodbye to our young male Sumatran orangutan, Godek. He is scheduled to move to Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA, in May or June, where he will be paired with a genetically compatible female when the time is right.
Godek was born at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and just celebrated his eighth birthday on Feb. 19. His parents are 29-year-old female, Sumagu, and 26-year-old male, Baka. In his new home, Godek will share his birthday with two of Woodland Park's existing orangutans - female, Chinta, and her nephew, Heran.   READ MORE

Conservation:
CMZ WILL CO-LEAD NEW NATIONAL GIRAFFE CONSERVATION EFFORTS
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will co-chair a new nationwide conservation project for giraffe. The new efforts will live under the umbrella of AZA SAFE (Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Saving Animals from Extinction), which was started in 2015 to harness the collective power of 232 AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums and their 186 million guests.
"There is a huge need for giraffe conservation in the wild," said Dr. Liza Dadone, Giraffe SMSS Co-Liaison and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's Vice President of Mission and Programs. "We are excited to start broader conversations with other zoos that house giraffes and see what joint impacts we can make on giraffe conservation by working together."   READ MORE
