The OLMA Overview -- March 23, 2017
We talk a lot about sisterhood at OLMA. While we know that it's not always perfect, it was as close as it gets to that last night. For the first time ever, we hosted the freshmen for a class sleepover. While none of us got much sleep, we all had an experience that we won't soon forget. This small, but mighty, class of young women are amazing. They are funny, talented and compassionate. They let their true selves shine through last night and bonded as a class -- and as friends and sisters. One of the best parts about this event was the excitement it created among so many of our older students. While they weren't sleeping over, they wanted to help make the night special. They took very good care of their "little" sisters and for that they deserve a world of thanks.
Next week, seniors will share a similar experience as they travel to Florida for their long-awaited class trip. They've more than earned it and I look forward to a great five days away with these wonderful girls.
Coming up soon is our Annual Art Auction. The girls are hard at work on their masterpieces, so please mark your calendar for the evening of April 6. Earlier that day, we will induct the newest members of the Mother Patricia Gaynor Chapter of the National Honor Society. The ceremony begins at 8:45 AM and all are welcome to attend as we honor an impressive slate of scholars.
I hope you enjoy the beautiful weather that's forecast for Saturday. At last, spring has arrived. -- Mrs. Coyle

Nicolette Merlino, Class of 2020
It's finally softball season, and OLMA freshman, Nicolette Merlino couldn't be happier. In fact, she has looked forward to the season's start for the last 11 years and is literally ready to...well, play ball!
"When it comes to hobbies, softball is it," said Nicolette. "I love playing and can't wait for our first official game." As a freshman, Nicolette said she already feels part of the team. "I was a little nervous at first because I was the only freshmen to join, but that went away very quickly," she said. "The other girls were very welcoming and supportive." Since then, two more freshmen, Derien Hartline and Corinne Shields, have joined Nicolette on the team.
Nicolette's second favorite place to be is on the road. So far, she has taken trips with her family and friends to Italy, France, London, California and Boston. "I love traveling and especially like learning about the history of the places I visit," said Nicolette. If she has her way, the next place she'd like to see is Spain -- and is a possible candidate for next year's OLMA-PREP Spain exchange next year.
For now, Nicolette is happy being a freshmen and says that last night's sleepover was the best. "Our class is close and this just brought us closer," she said. "It was a great time and I don't think you'd find this type of activity anywhere else." We're pretty sure she's right about that.
Looking ahead to the future, Nicolette says that she wants to be a dentist. "I've gone through a lot with my teeth and want to help other people care for theirs," she said. While she has plenty of time to decide, she already has her sights set on the University of Miami. "My aunt lives there and it's in the heart of the state," said Nicolette. "That's where I want to be."

The Freshmen "No Sleep" Sleepover
It was a night like no other. It began with visits from many of our teachers who were there to join in the fun and lend support. They also heard from Juniors, Gianna Capriotti and Hope Viviani about their freshmen year. They had fun identifying high school pictures of the teachers and staff who are OLMA grads. They also did some yoga, and played games galore. These included: the Name Game, Freshmen Feud, Ball Game, Minute to Win It, Hide and Seek Freshmen Fishbowl, and more. They ate and then ate some more, and simply had a blast.
This night would not have been possible without the many sophomores and juniors who decorated, created all the games, and filled the evening with endless surprises. Thanks also to all the parents who provided snacks, decorations and allowed their daughters to share in this experience. It's definitely one they will always remember. It was sisterhood at its best.
