In late February, Tom Waid, M.D., Tuyen Tran, M.D., I, and Chris Hickey, LMS CEO, went to Washington D.C. to attend the American Medical Association National Advocacy Conference. We spent time on Capitol Hill hearing lectures by senators, health-care experts and speaking with senators and representatives from Kentucky. We were included in the KMA delegation, including KMA CEO Pat Padgett, members of the Greater Louisville Medical Society and the Northern Kentucky Medical Society, as well as some at-large members of the KMA. Leadership of the Business of Medicine Series Begins April 22
|
Lexington Medical Society is beginning its partnership with the U.K. Gatton College of Business and Economics to bring its members a new series of programming called, "Leadership of the Business of Medicine." The intent is to bring our members medical-focused, business education. We are leveraging having a world-class business school here in Lexington that has recently started a health-care focused, Masters of Business Administration program. This workshop initiative supports the LMS Strategic Plan
goal of "Physician Leadership Development & Mentorship."

New MBA Program for Healthcare Professionals

The University of Kentucky's MBA at the Gatton College of Business and Economics has a new
Professional MBA For Leaders in Healthcare
track, which has been tailored to offer specific courses for healthcare professionals while still providing the core business principles. The former Chief Medical Officer at UK Healthcare, Dr. Bernard Boulanger, recently graduated from the Professional MBA program at the University of Kentucky in 2016 and suggested that a healthcare focus in the Professional MBA program would be of great interest to many physicians, nurses and administrators that are looking to expand their business knowledge in conjunction with their medical background. In response, the program was developed and introduced less than a year ago and is already receiving strong interest from a variety of healthcare professionals in Central Kentucky, including physicians.

Contrary to popular belief, classic pension plans have not disappeared.
Corporations have mostly jettisoned them, but highly profitable small businesses are giving them a second look. Why are small business owners deciding to adopt old-school, employer-funded retirement plans?
The tax breaks attached to a defined benefit plan may be substantial.
In fact, if these plans are funded with insurance contracts or guaranteed insurance products, plan contributions made by the owner become tax-deductible for the business.

There is no cap on how much you can save.
IRAs, 401(k)s, and SEPs all have annual contribution limits. Traditional employer-funded pension plans do not. Business owners have the potential to accumulate millions for the future through such a vehicle.
