A lively October lies ahead! Please join us for a series of engaging programs that explore the nature of art's purposes and the emergence of modernism in the first half of the twentieth century. Among the leaders sharing their perspectives are Bowdoin alumni, Brian Ferriso '88, Shelley Langdale '85, Andrew Walker '87, and Roger Conover '72. In late October, the Museum celebrates the opening of
Assyria to America, which will contextualize Bowdoin's famous Assyrian reliefs in relationship to the artistic and material culture in which they developed. Come explore the fascinating interconnections between past and present on view at the Museum.
See you at the Museum!

Assyria to America examines the ancient and modern histories of Bowdoin's six reliefs from ancient Nimrud, bringing them together with ivory furniture inlays, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, and palace vessels to explore the sumptuous sensory experience and vibrant court life of the Neo-Assyrian empire.

This exhibition examines the geometry and design of ancient art and the efforts by artists to represent depth and movement by influencing the vantage point of the viewer. By simply flipping a coin, rotating a vase, or walking around a sculpture, the composition changes and new perspectives emerge. Using artifacts from
the
ancient Mediterranean,
In
the Round explores early innovations in representational art.
